I know this is not a tempo forum but i thought one of you guys might be able tohelp me anyways. My friend and i were looking at buying this tempo for $200 and fixing it to sell it and get some money. The problems are first it takes forever to get it to crank over and to accomplish this you have to pump the gas while the key is turned for like 5 seconds. Also after it starts if you dont keep giving it gass it will die. Second preblem is that there is oil in the air box that is coming from the hose that is connected to the valve cover. There is also a lot of smoke that is out of the valve cover and coming through that hose into the air box. When we first looked at it the air filter was soked with oil and we had to take the filter out to get it to crank. It is not making any wierd sounds except for the suking sound coming from the air box because the top is not in place. The exhaust looks fine except for a little leak but there is nothing that looks like it would be causing back pressuer exhaust wise. Thanks for the help and if no one knows i understand :-[
But anyways thanks.

check the PCV valve, make sure all the pushrods and lifters and valves are okay, and it sounds like you BAV (bypass air valve) is fuxxored. This lets extra air in on startup of the car, even though the TB may be shut. the BAV is not controlled by the ECU so it probably has to be replaced.

I hope I´m not too late. Don´t do it.I bought an 89 for 100 bucks that has a great body, runs great, nice interior, tinted windows, alloy wheels and I can´t hardly give it away. The simple fact is this Tempo´s are dogs.Look at how many are out there then look at how many are in the car lots where you live, the dealers know it.I learned my lesson but hey if ya want one for $200 I got a black beauty for ya.

LMAO...A tempo is a lemon made crapfully by ford.

it comes in 2dr or 4dr.
it has either a 2.3l $cy or a 3.06cy..Also known as the "vulcan" engine.
also, comes in a diesel model..
ranged from 1984 to 1994.
Comes in the Gl, LX, and XR4 models. Known for electrical issues, known for rust, and known for pieces of crap..

My first car was a tempo, i did a little bit of modding to it, then hit a deer. Thats when i bought my 92 gt.

Id personally just scrap the idea. Tempos dont really market for enough to make any amount of money by fixing them up and selling them. You can buy a good running tempo for only a few hundred bucks. Unless you just want to do it for the experience of fixing as car, it wnt really be worth your while.
