Well, I'm having issues with my tach... it seems to work when it wants. I haven't figured out what causes it to come on... if it is working ill occasionally hit a bump and its off. However it won't work if its off and hit a bump.

Because the tach works occasionally I think a wire is loose, but I have no idea where to start. Thoughts/Opinions?

Any other issues with your instrument cluster? There's only one wiring harness connector to the back of the cluster. So if that was loose, there'd more things going wacky for you.

Some one will correct me if I'm wrong, but there should be a wire from the coil that goes to the tach. You might need to scope things out there.

My personal feelins is that your tach is ready to go out.

The tach is gone. The coil windings are very thin and disintegrate after enough time. Get a 90's Escort cluster and jam the new style tach in the old cluster. It take a little glue, some hotwiring, and some forcing. Cow did one that looks really good, I did one that looks crummy but works.

I didn't do one, man. My stock tach still work :p, but my speedometer sucks horribly, and bounces when doing 70 (looking into replacing it).

IF I was to replace my tach, however, I'd for for a good aftermarket one that fit, and mount it in there. I have a 3" Sunpro sitting around collecting dust, however.

This just happened to me for the first time yesterday. Banged on the side of the dash and it went back to normal.

Tried that; no bueno. It worked for my fuel gauge and temp gauge on my old 4dr scort.

So best bet is to get a new tach? And fit it into the stock position?

I mean... As much as I want to have a ricer 6" tach with a 2" shift light...

Any explanation as to why the tach works sometimes and it doesn't at others?

Or would that just be the tach going out in style?

Any wires that could be loose that I should check first?

It's probably a break in the coil winding for the tach needle. It might make a connection at one point, and then come loose again, creating an open in the circuit. It's repairable, but would require taking the tach completely apart and rebuilding the coil...in other words; not easy or quick. Just install a new tach, although keep in mind most aftermarket new ones use the positive wire going to the coil, and not the negative as the stock Escort tach does...at least mine was wired this way.

Quick question regarding the gauges... I'm going to be doing the tachometer replacement, and sorta figured since I'm in the dash would swapping the speedo work as well? Every now and then I get the urge to go past the 85mph mark, which is somewhat frustrating because I have to guess at how fast I'm going.

I know that the speedo isn't calibrated that high, but it'd be nice to get a general idea of speed. Would swapping out speedos work fine as well?

No, the factory one for an aftermarket one. Still needle-based but top end near 125 if I remember right.

I assumed that :p....thought you'd go for a digital aftermarket. I don't know if a mechanical one would be calibrated as stock, but I have no doubt it could be properly calibrated. You could always pen in the numbers yourself, since there's no pin to stop the needle. Or just go by the tachometer reading. For me, doing 3k rpm is 75 mph, and I gain 5 mph for every 250 rpm. So, 4k is 95 mph, and I know this despite my speedo going beyond its rating.

Never truly thought of it that way; I'm too lazy to look. And right now my tach is out of order so it would be impossible to do so. :D

Just seeing if I can, I planned on doing a gauge-cluster rennovation/update soon, just seeing what I can do versus what I can't.

I just swapped a better cluster into my car, and saw how the tach mounts...super easy to mod another in. I'll check the other tach I have to see if I can repair it or not. If I can..I'll probably sell the cluster or something. Now I just have to chase down why the damn temp gauge reads nothing...I'm switching to a mechanical soon anyway, as I like hard numbers to read. I had it hooked up earlier, and it hit 190F on the intake by the time the cooling fan kicks on (which is 220 at the thermostat..as spec'd by the switch). That's a pretty big difference between temps, so I'll have to keep that in mind. I thought about putting the sender in the oil plug area to read oil temps, but that is probably unnecessary.

Lemme know how it goes.

If it matters at all the Escort topped out at 115mph, which is better than I expected. It could go higher, but I was seriously lackin in power.

I put in a new speedo that is in KPH main and MPH as the smaller numbers. I think it is calibrated close and it goes higher, don't remember how high, but I can check tonight. I think all the stock gauges are coming out this winter and Autometer gauges on a carbon fiber or an Aluminum board will be going in. If I did that, i would be willing to sell what I have.

Speaking of top speed, I know what tranny I'll use if I build a turbo front drive Escort...the Pony model MTX-2.
By 6k rpm, with 195/60/14 tires I'd be doing 186 mph. I think that would not only be amazing, but downright scary, not to mention require a good amount of power. Math is fun!
