i have a 91 escort, i bought a sunpro tach and well i dont know which wire is the tach signal wire, can anyone help me with this, it would be greatly appreciated. i looked in the haynes manual and didnt find anything useful. i got the light, power and ground hooked up, i just dont know which wire is the tach signal

white - interior lights
red - constant power
black - ground

Is there something wrong with your stock tach?

There is something wrong with all stock tachs.. in the higher RPM's they can be as far off as 600 RPM's.
Mine freely revs to 7800, when i know it cuts off at about 7000..

Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not quite following how stock tachs can be off and what that means to the average joe like myself. Please help me be less ignorant. Thanks

When he means off he means like if your tach is at 6k you could really be at something below that.

i dont have a stock tach in my car, thats why i got a aftermarket one, i know the green wire is the signal wire on the tach but what wire on the car is for the tach signal

Personally, I would have gone to a junkyard and pulled an instrument cluster from a car with a tach before I added an aftermarket tach. Would probably be easier.

Step 2 - Buy a Haynes or Chilton's Manual
Step 3 - Look it up.

i got a haynes manual, found the tachometer, but there were 3 different wires, tried em all, 2 of em when i connected the tach wire the needle jumped at that was it, didnt do anything. i looked at the wiring diagrams some more but couldnt find anything else for it, so now im stuck unless someone has put one in and knows what wire it is, thanks to you all for the help so far

don't look at where ford hooked their tach up, cuz christ knows what the hell they were doing.. find the part of the book that shows you how to install your coil, see which wire they say is the negative (or the ground) for the coil, and splice it to that.

i have coil packs i dont have a distributor, if i did then this would be so much eaiser to do, but ford has to have those damn coil packs in their vehicles, so i dunno what to do next, any suggestions, anyone here hook up a tach on a coil pack ignition system, the engine i have is a 1.9 SEFI
