I have a 1995 Ford Escort that has the infamous VSS stuck in the transmission. I am going to get it out one way or another, but I would like to have the replacement VSS ready to throw in as soon as I get the old one out. The problem is that there is a 22 tooth VSS and a 23 tooth VSS and although they are interchangeable, using the wrong one will throw off the speedo. Which one do I need? I have a 95 Escort wagon with a 1.9, a 5 speed manual, and 14" wheels. If anything what VSS will my escort MOST LIKELY take, given the information I have listed?

someone has swapped the gear of the VSS so u could use one from any 5 speed escort lx and swap the gear. that's just what i assume u could do but don't take my word. if u can figure out how to swap them then give it a shot.

Which 14 inch tires are you using?

Just grab the VSS down at the bottom with a vise grips and wiggle back and forth. Just dont try to remove it from the plastic body, it will break.
You then will beable to reuse the old one and not have to worry about finding a replacment.

A twisting pull motion is what worked for me. It may or may not be possible that air-pressure... the seal is what's helping to keep it sucked in there.

But it may come off all-of-sudden causing you to break the gear off and have it fall inside the transmission so be careful.

Completely stock '94 5-speed LX 14" wheels sport cluster tach - OEM Red Gear

Don't recall whether the red gear is the 22 or 23 toothed biter... but I'd guess the latter if forced.

i believe that if you have the 120mph speedo then it's the red one and the whiteish one is for the 80mph speedo. i swapped out my speedo to the 120 mph one and the car i pulled it from had the red gear whereas the one that was in mine had the white one. thats my .02 cents

The 120mph vs. 80 mph makes the most sense to me. Although I doubt that I will be going above 80 anyway, but its best to have the right part rather than the wrong one. I feel pretty safe with the 22 tooth red one, but I'll double check my speedo to make sure. Secondly, all of the VSS's I see online are basically the same thing, with the only variation being the tooth count. Is the VSS the same in the auto as in the manual?

dunno the answer to that, buy MY 5spd has the whitish gear and am MAD AT MYSELF for not counting the teeth; Oh, and my 5spd has the 80 mph speedo.

Oh, smile smile; the VSS came out EASILY. The only piece of GOOD luck I've had in the last 12 years, ha.

FWIW.

Then it must have something to do with the wheel size, rather than the speedo top end. Although I'm 99% positive that the 80 mph speedo came only on the ones with 13" wheels, being that I've had a few (6 of them). Come to think of it now, I'm pretty positive that my 94' with the same setup had a red gear too.
