the stock EGT/protege LX transmission is what you want (same thing).

the 323 and protege DX transmissions are weaker and use a much smaller clutch.

You asked the strongest, stock up on back ups or have a custom sequential built.

run gear oil in it, redline MTL or MT90 would be some good choices.

a custom sequential sounds... expensive. i think im going into debt just thinking about it @[email protected] id probably use the gt transmission and strengthen it as much as possible. by the way, what would be involved in strengthening a transmission...?

    kia

the strongest tranny for our cars is the 1 from the kia sephia gs 94-97, its got a lil stouter gearing and gears for the 5spd, if you want a stronger auto buy the kit with the kevlar clutches and stronger valve body from a tranny shop.

    tranny

good luck finding 1 at the junker or for sale though lol, I have not seen even 1 at a junker here or for sale as of yet, I would like to though as it would make some nice possibilities for a kia buildup that would shock some ppl. :p

Some of the Kia Sportages ran the FE3 in them. Imagine taking an FE3 with the transmission, and having yourself a RWD machine :D

    fe3

actually the fe3 swap would be wicked if you used both the engine and trans, he fe3 can take a really high amount of boost and it takes a lot of abuse. They make a great engine to build from.

Has anyone attempted this? I once entertained the idea, but those parts are difficult to find. If anything, if I ever had an extra 'scort, I would take something like a BP(actually, why stop there with a project like this? I could use anything with the amount of required fabbing..) stick it in the back with some modified transaxles, and have a mid-engine RWD :D

    FE3

the FE3 came in the kia sportages, but in my opinion the bpt swap makes the most sense and is in my opinion the most cost effective swap for the money. If you want to make it better then opt for a bigger turbo such as the gtr version of the bpt.

    Re: kia

Got a blown '97 Sephia 5spd yesterday for $40...I needed a 1/2 shifter fork for my dirt toy. Not sure that t is any stronger than the EGT...case does look a bit meatier around the input shaft w/ plenty of webbing. The Kia trans had stripped reverse gears(do not mess around in reverse...those gears are 3/16" thick at best!), bad input shaft bearing, & a blown synchro (not sure what gear). Internals look the same as the EGT with the exception that the 1/2 shift fork is all steel (instead of aluminum w/ steel insert). Have to dig out my calipers and measure things while they're apart. Obvious differences I've seen so far include the external sensor plugs (reverse, neutral, and speedo), the Kia has a oil fill plug on the side of the case, and the diff has 28 splines (vs 26 on the EGT).

    Brent.

PS: the 1.6L Kia looks to be a different beast w/ 1-piece passenger side axle.

the 1.6 tranny is similar to the 323 and protege dx transmission.

brentlz, is the car you got the trans from still at the junkyard? i could really use the midshaft that bolts to the back of the block if its in good shape.
