i posted this in engine tuning but figured since it's about the stock car i could here too, i'm gonna be getting a 85 gt soon and the guy who i'm getting it from isn't too bright and can't tell me what engine it has. also i drove it yesterday and it's decently quick and all but what can i do to give it some extra kick cheaply. he says he put a turbo on it but like i said he is dumb and prolly don't know what one is and was prolly just talkin out his ass like usual. sorry for my long post but this is my first and didn't want to miss anything any answers will help

85 gt? well um... I couldn't tell you what engine it has either... never heard of an 85 gt, unless it's the 84-88 gt turbo model? If that's it then it has a turbo on it.

first generation Escorts start 88.5-90, & 2nd gen is 91-96, & so on and so forth...

if it's a gt then it's the 84-88? like i said this guy isn't too smart and i'm only going off what he's told me and i've seen the car maybe twice, even when i drove it i never got outta 3rd barely got into as a matter of fact in the 3 blocks i drove.

EDIT:i said that he told me it was turbo so wouldn't that mean it was a gt turbo. maybe i didn't make that clear enough some how or maybe you just misread but still haven't been able to find out what motor is in it. sorry if i seem straight forward or "excited" but i need to know what motor is in it before i will get teh chance to see it again so i figured i'd post in every valid section. i just like to plan things out and if this isn't the car i thought it'd be then i'd just get my caprice running.

james i belive that first gens start around 84 maybe even earlier. I think the 84-86 was a 1.6l Turbo, and then 87-90 was a 1.9 H.O. boasting about 115-117 hp. Torque im not tooo sure on. And if IT is a turbo 1.6 you found yourself a rare car my friend...rare indeed. Ive been looking for a long while now far and long for the exhaust and little itty bitty turbo thats on there, id put it on my scort, and run low boost, just for a feel. but ive gone away, ive had alot of ideas on what i could and couldnt do in my 89LX auto. But im just gonna rebuild the valvetrain...and then swap cams out of a GT and put the 1.9HO header on my scort. So....in conclusion you need to get alook under the hood, and just see. Easiest way...EVER. If its a 1.9 HO....it will say 1.9HO im not too sure about anything else....let us know.

EDIT: Im really suprised that i didnt think of this sooner....
The 1985 1/2-1986 Escort models came with all new engines. The 1.6L CVH engines were replaced with two 1.9L CVH engines. There was a 1.9L carbureted engine with 86 horsepower, and a 1.9L fuel injected engine with 108 horsepower. The fuel injected engine was standard in the GT model, and optional in the other models. Mercury released it's GT clone, known as the XR3.

I drove a 1985 Escort GT (the ones that's the same as the 1984 model with the 1.6L engine, not the 1985.5 with the 1.9L engine) for 11 years and 157,000 realitively trouble free miles. Escorts have been around since 1981 or 1982 I think and I think GT's since 1983 or 1984. There was an Escort SS before that (and even a diesel model). I'm referring to US models.

they were here from 81-90 for the first gens! the turbo model i think was only in 84 on a 1.6, and the ealry gt were supposed to be 1.6 or a little under power 1.9, the car changed in 85.5

escort i think have been around a little longer our 81085 models are based ont eh mk3 escort, there was a mk1, and mk2, and the mk1 was supposed ot be a rear wheel drive.
