i'm gonna be getting a 85 gt soon and the guy who i'm getting it from isn't too bright and can't tell me what engine it has. also i drove it yesterday and it's decently quick and all but what can i do to give it some extra kick cheaply. he says he put a turbo on it but like i said he is dumb and prolly don't know what one is and was prolly just talkin out his ass like usual. sorry for my long post but this is my first and didn't want to miss anything any answers will help

I'm guessing this is your first car? Best mod? weight reduction :). I suggest not dogging the crap out of it and drive it till A) it dies B) You get a new car or if in the event B doesn't occur C) you die. Just be gentle on it. My 89 LX 5-speed had a peppy little engine in it.

i think the 85 had a L4 1.6, not sure though

not sure why this would be my first car but sure. well weight isn't gonna be happy after i get my system outta my closet and stick the 15 in it. i'm still confused as to why you think this is my first car.

EDIT: must be cuz i said it was "kinda quick" or whatever i said but all i was meaning is compared to what i thought it would be it had a little bit of "go" to it. far from first car prolly closer to 10th in the last 2.5years. if i thought it was fast i wouldn't need any mods and compared to my 84 caprice wagon with the 305 it has plenty of power lol.

He probably meant that he thought it was your first car because you seem a little excited about getting an ESCORT 85 GT... for someone who's had two or three cars, an Escort is nothing compared to what they could be buying.

Don't take offense to his assumption, I probably would have made the same one.

ok then, i'll make a special trip to his house and check it out and make sure what year it is then while i'm there i'll check what motor it is. i tried to make the point that i have barely seen the car and that he wasn't "car savvy" just incase this was the case someone could say, hey that car doesn't exist your facts musta gotten mixed up. instead of this. again sorry for confusion and hopefully if i decide to go the Fix Or Repair Daily route i can take alot of knowledge outta here.

Well, its not a busy site much. but what it has on it is a lot of good information...i for one have never heard of a 85 GT motor, but I've heard of an 84 Escort Turbo model. I used to have a pic of a promotional poster of it.
The early 1985 models did have a 1.6L engine (manufactured in late 1984). It's the 1985.5 models that got the 1.9L

Turbo was only available in 1984 and 1985 on the 1.6L engine, and it is exceedingly rare (although one in nearly mint condition went for about $1100 about a month ago). I test drove a 1985GT Turbo when I bought my 1985GT.

This is what a real 1985 Escort GT looks like (except wheels have been changed):
