The steering wheel in my 88 escort gt feels like it’s loose. I can move the steering wheel up down about a half inch but the rest of the column is seems tight, is there a way to tighten this up? Thanks.

Is it a tilt column? I know both my EXP's wiggles a little too.

Do you mean the wheel will move in-n-out relative to the column? That indicates there is a small plastic or or spring steel insert down inside the column mechanism that has come loose. The columns are made to be able to collapse in an accident, and the small amount of 'freedom' to the inside of the column, i.e. the steering shaft, is probably harmless. On two of my five 2nd gen Escorts, I can pull the column up about 3/4". It just pushes back down. Doesnt seem to hurt anything.

Both my EXP's wiggle up and down about 1/2-1" Floor pan to roof. not dash to driver.
I had a none tilt column in storage that did not do that.

My 8 non-tilt columns don't move more than 3mm up or down

Hi all. It wiggles up and down from floor to dash. Even with tilt, it seems like there should be a way to get the slack out. By the way thanks for all the comment so far.

I'm pretty sure it's the same as my 87 tilt column. I have this problem every 3 years or so. There are 2 bolts that work loose over time (probably due to me pulling on the steering wheel as I'm getting in and out). Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds. Remove the 2 Torx® head screws holding the wiper/turn signal switch to the column. Behind the switch you'll see 2 hex head bolts with 13mm heads. These are the ones to tighten.

    Hope this helps.
