I tried to buy gasoline at a gas station a couple hundred miles from home yesterday as I had to make a delivery there, and I could not because they refused to take cash.
The first time I've come across this. Ironically I was able to enter the station and talk to them, however. I did go down the road to the next station which didn't mind cash.

Another thing now if you are travelling - fast food joints are drive through only, and they and the gas stations won't let you use the toilets, so we're down to pit stops in the bushes on the side of the road. Not so bad for us guys, but a bit more awkward for the girls.

It's amazing how many folks' bathroom manners/habits are atrocious and suspect they were just looking for an excuse not to have to clean them... because I guarantee that the employees don't go through the entire workday without using them. They could simply put up a sign stating "Due to COVID, ONE OCCUPANT AT A TIME". Yeah, I can see folks that really have to go, myself included, choosing to "ignore" that though. But then there are these things called masks? (albeit, anything but fool proof)

I thought the masks were to protect my identity!....
Im glad you pointed out the effect of social-distancing on rest areas, etc. I will have to do a search to find if rest areas will be open in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and VA.
In a couple of weeks we plan to travel the 2000 miles from our winter home in south TX, to our summer place near the nations' capital.
And at my age, (75.5) I usually dont get to wait on my bowels.

Happily on our long road trips a lot of the highway looks like this, so it's just a hike into the woods fifty feet with a trenching shovel and TP roll in case of emergency (sorry about the pickup, I drove it instead of the Escort to take back a pile of junk):

I was wondering if you were in town yet, but figured that the recent polar vortex had maybe delayed your arrival. Seriously check the weather here before you plan your trip.

Everything is on lockdown here in Cali but, unfortunately, no state is immune from dumbasses. Granted it was hot yesterday but 40,000 frickin' idiots decided it would be a good idea to go to the beach, Newport Beach to be exact.

Reports have shown that ANY sort of gathering will usually result in additional infections so, while wearing masks is a good preventative measure, it still isn't 100% in regards to protection. I own a P100 respirator that I use whenever I paint something so it came in especially useful during this pandemic.

Suffice to say the moron convention at the beach is going to result in more infections delaying a reduction in both infections and deaths delaying the relaxing of lockdown rules and the reopening of the economy.

I understand those in rural, more spread out areas are railing against the rules due to the damage the lockdown has caused economically but if we're even going to see the other side of this pandemic we need to get those infection and death rates down. Reports are showing that even these areas are not immune to high infection rates and since scientists don't really have a grasp on how truly infectious this disease is erring on the side of caution is the most prudent, in my opinion, option to take.

Italy has a population of 60 million with 193,000 confirmed cases of corona virus and of those 193,000 only 26,000 deaths which is .3% of the population that was/is infected and .04% of the population killed by it. I would much rather have all states open up and start trying to ameliorate as much economic damage as we can instead of staying closed down because youre afraid of the extremely small chance of dying. People who are that worried should just stay home, its that simple.

    26/193=.134

26k out of the 193k is 13% death rate.

    Cross check... 13% of 193 is ~25.

@ZZ - I assume this was something copied from Reddit or other? 13 is such a lucky number BTW. :)

Looks like ZZ's using the White House calculators! LOL!

Federal guidelines put in place by our health professionals at CDC, NHS, etc. want to see at least 14 days of declining infection and death rates before we can even think about reopening. Gatherings will almost certainly drive both of those rates higher. This is why strict adhesion to these guidelines will be the fastest way for our economy to get going again. Once we can achieve those outcomes we can begin to reopen while diligently deploying mitigation teams to contact trace and test to best determine how to isolate the virus in those hotspots but none of that can happen until we can control the spread of the virus.
One of the reasons this virus is especially nasty is the incubation period. It can be spread for weeks on end with no discernible clue then, for those that do take on the symptoms, it can progress into a life threatening situation quickly like in a matter of days. Asymptomatics can infect and kill 100's without having a clue in a very short time. That, to me, is the biggest problem. We don't REALLY know how truly infectious it is or what the actual kill rate is hence the drastic measures being taken.

Also, please remember that the Spanish flu of 1918 killed 3 million people worldwide. Same scenario as today. It was a new, unknown virus. Governments reopened quickly after starting to see a slight decline in infections and deaths, just like what's happening today with Georgia and other states that are defying Federal guidelines.

40 million people died in the second wave that came from putting money over life.

One last note, the way most Covid19 patients die is through ARDS(Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). Essentially they drown in their own fluids through pneumonia caused by a cytokine storm. Terrible way to die.

    26000 / 60000000 = 0.000433333333
    Hence .04% fatality rate

    193000 / 60000000 = 0.003216666666
Or .3% of the total population confirmed infected. Actual percentage rate infected is way higher though. Entire towns have been tested.

Probably could have been worded better though.

I've always thought of "death rate" as being, "the number dead out of total people affected." In other words, how many died, of those who've been infected. Up until reading that, I've always calculated around 2%, instead of 13%. So that's curious.

    By definition, you're right...
