well the time will soon come when i will have to change out my spi as it just spun a main crank bearing

im running a 80 - 20 mix ( 10w30 / atf ) an the knock is fairly quiet for the moment ( 1500 kms so far since it started )

Now here's the thing ive been doing some work for a friend of mine of a few of this fleet trucks ( body work on tow trucks ) and he gave me a proposition.

instead of paying me full in cash he was going to do a 50% cash the rest a 2005 Focus zx3 w/5spd , the car was his sons an well .... he went to the track a few weeks ago an ...... rolled it. since i got a whole car to work with an i have a dying spi .... swap ? now since i have a 2k5 zx3 my self i know there $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to mod so i'd keep this one stock ish an a DD

i know motor mounts will be a 100% custom but thats ok ( since the zetec an duratec share similar mounts the zx2 rear mount an pass side mount will be the same or very close )

any thoughts guys?

If I remember correctly the Duratec has the intake and exhaust on the opposite sides. That alone is gonna be a pain to deal with. Think of the header you will have to make. Not to mention the electrical aspect. A Zetec swap would serve you better. I also seem to have found an easy away around the fuel system issue when doing a Zetec swap on a 97. If you want to hear it let me know.

Anything helps , as this was just a thought tumbling in my head for the time being .

im not affraid of fab work of any kind , the duratec's exh is actually really easy to work with you could actually use the section of pipe up to the 2nd cat if you had to. if i ever grenade the bp in my 95 ill reconsider this over the course of the winter . more or less a complete harness swap keeping the critical junk an making my own aux loom for int lights ect. could use a 2.3L ranger ( 2003-05 ) trans for a rwd swap

yea i guess i'l settle for a zetec , i want to try an keep this thing a good manor 'd DD .

I havn't done any real reading on zetec swaps so any compatibility of things would help , an a rough list of what i need to change an what can stay ,

if i get pinched for time ill stick a spi back in for the winter

From what I have read, you need the zx2 engine harness and computer harness, preferably from a newer zx2 that has a 4 wire A/C high pressure switch, ECU, CCRM, starter and flywheel. You will also need all the zx2 accessories, (alt. PS pump, ect.) A/C accumulator and A/C lines from the passenger side of the engine compartment, engine mounts, ect. You will still have to run one wire for the A/C to work but its isn't a big deal

The 97 Escorts used a return line fuel system that is incompatible with the zx2 computer. Supposedly, the only way around this is to swap out all the wiring, fuel pump, and tank. I was curious one day and looked up the wiring schematics, turns out the only thing different in the fuel system electrically is the addition of a fuel pump driver module. The way it wired is simple too. The fuel pump power wire would go to the module instead of to the pump, 2 wires go from the module to the computer, one wire goes to the computer from the sending unit, and 2 wires go to the pump. According to the schematic both pumps look the same too so I don't think there will be a need to swap the tank and pump just to do the swap. Of course you would have to plug the fuel return line. Supposedly, everything plugs in on the 98 up Escorts so I don't know how that is going to be on the 97 but I can't see it being drastically different.

Keep in mind, this is something I just came up with, it has never been done this way before. If I ever need a new engine I am going to try the Zetec swap this way.

I thought you were able to use Contour parts for the fuel system. I remember reading that somewhere.

that i can do , change out the fuel rail for a 95 ish contour fuel rail , if the zetec runs with the spi ecu thats a bonus for me to get started

this swap is looking to be more of a MUST do than a want to do atm.

i haven't seen a zx2 come in the yard for some time so it could just be a temp spi for the mean time. although the atx is goin bye bye with the dying mule while im in there

The biggest problem with running it with using the SPI computer is you will get a CEL because the Zetec doesn't have EGR. Depending on where you live that may be a problem for emissions testing depending on where you live.

The EGR problem can be solved by going into a tuner shop and reprogram the ECU or PCM. or get a full reprogrammable ECU.
