Just wondering what kind of numbers in the 1320 or on dyno, that people have seen from this car. I have a cam the previous owner never installed, and I was gonna put it in with a good head job. He still owes me the retainers and springs.

I have a 97 Auto with a 2.5" exhaust, CAI, SPI Controller that keeps throwing codes, and that's about it for now. The addition of a 50% UDP would be nice, and may come soon.

I wonder if this cam will even make much of a difference in the auto, since most autos shift as a performance cam comes online. Maybe I will spray a 40-75 shot and see how that does after the pulley.

I just wonder if 14s are possible on an auto with the headwork and a little spraying. My motor is from a 2000, which has like 20,000 miles on it.

i timed myself at 14.1 last night. however its not accurate because we were using a stop watch. but i am also not all motor. im 50% motor and 50% turbo

With a 3rd gen Auto W/ bolt on's dont exspect much faster then high 16's, maybe even low 17's. But with spray it's very possible to see 14's. That tranny is really robbing your power.
You might want to think about a tranny cooler, or a 5 speed swap.

What good would a tranny cooler do, besides extend the life of the trans?
Is there a performance upgrade for this tranny I don't know about?

when oil or fluid is cooler its thicker. thicker oil makes it easier to shift since its easier to compress.

True, but my tranny shifts pretty darn hard. Since I used Polyurethane caulk to fill in the tranny and motor mounts, it also tends to vibrate a little bit more, but I think it helped because the tranny mount was almost gone.

That was a good upgrade and worth trying. I recommend 3M because theirs is the thickest, but it was unavailable when I was shopping so I settled for another brand of caulk, and did have to touch it up once after the initial setting.

A good tranny cooler and amsoil synthetic fluid was good for .5 off the 1/4 in my 95 nissan altima auto. So a tranny cooler and high quality fluid I think is worth the money besides it will greatly extend the life of your tranny.

well just fyi my totally gutted 97 ran a 17.2 at the track with the auto tranny, cai, cat back, msd coil, and ported tb. with the sort ram it was slower, but anyway, i am soo glad i did a 5spd swap and nitrous! ill never go back to auto!

that 2.5" exhaust is killing your torque curve.. and with as much as 20-25% of your power not getting to the ground, you need that torque. 2.25" would have been a better choice.

a high lift cam with head work in an auto 3rd gen with a 50 shot of nitrous.. um, not 14s sorry. at best low to mid 15s with that trans.

the cam and head work will get you to the same power output as a Zetec DOHC.. and in a similarly weighted car, they only run mid to high 15s with a 5spd.

top that with a 50 shot and your only going to lose maybe .5-1.0 secods off the quarter mile. as it is, with Zetec like power in the not so high revving CVH engine, you'll be sitting on a low 16 sec qtr. so 15s yes 14s no. not with what you suggest.

how much did the swap cost ya and did you do it yourself?

it was about 1000$ almost all new parts except fior the tranny which had 80K and yea no problems whatsoever.. very easy, we completed it in a weekend, drove it home auto on friday at 6pm, drove it out at 5pm on sunday a 5spd. it is way easier than people think! if you need help.. please AIM ME!!!! i have been thru it and i can honestly say it is the best thing for the escort.. i lost soo soo soooooooo much power fromn the auto, plus it is way funner to drive. the whole project was awesome and i would do it again in a heartbeat. btw it could be done for way less, this is with brand new axels, exedy clutcxh and all new mount brackets and bolts from ford dealer, not the jy. basically brand new everything, or rebuilt warrenteed parts. good luck, hope to hear from ya mobman!

add me...omar3550 on AIM, also did you have to get an MTX tranny computer? What About the firewall? HOw did you cut it and the shift linkerages must;ve been a pain, especially for someone with a few tools and no formal training in auto mechanics anyways, add me I have to talk to you about it, I want to go turbo but lose the ATX also.

ok for starters.. no 5spd ecu is needed, but i also did that and its plug and play.. u need to get a 97 for 97 or a 98-up for a 98 and up for the diff fuel lines. no cutting is needed man.. its all bolt on and can be done in a weekend.. i had never pulled a tranny b4 and it was easy man.. ttyl

ya but how did you get the clutch linkerage through the firewall? Was that also plug and play? thanks

there is no shift linkage through the firewall. its a hydraulic clutch.

you install the clutch master cylinder in the blank spot for the clutch master cylinder thats on your car, then just run a peice of 3/16" brake line to the clutch slave cylinder, once you install the line for the brake fluid resevoir to feed the clutch, you just bleed it and be done with that part.

the actual shift linkage pretty much bolts right on.

just remember to install a pilot bearing in the crankshaft since your auto engine wont have one.

i did this swap on a 99se and we didnt have to swap the ECM btw.
