I am new to driving fords, and I was curious about something. I'm driving a 98 escort lx, and on the 55mph mark, there are 2 hash marks rather than 1. My first thought was that it has to do with the best fuel economy on the car, but I'm not sure. Any help is greatly appreciated!

does it go in 10-mph increments? because most vehicles have that mark at 55. especially hondas. i think it's because 55mph tends to be the most common at high speed.

I think it's because 55 is a pretty common speed limit, and yeah it might give you the best fuel economy... However, actually running at the lowest RPM in fifth gear will give you the best economy. But that's like 45 mph and you can't go on the highway. I dunno. All the cars I've ever driven had that little mark there.

actualy intill the year 2001 all cars produced, had a 55 mark. This reasing is till 98 most states where told by the Natial Highway safty admin, that the max, freeway speed was 55 mph. After 98 many states ie michigan changed it to 70. Most cars fuel econmny now is decided by the 65 to 70 range. It used to be 55.
