After my speedometer died in a '91 Escort with 1.9 engine and manual transmission , I replaced the cable only to figure the real problem is probably the drive gear that engages the manual transmission between the physical cable's end and the internal gear in the transmission. Does anyone know a part number and/ or source for this piece? (It includes a Hall effect pickup and is geared, with a coupler that fits the squared off cable.)
The shaft that's removable from the top is easy enough, but the internal gear looks like it can only be replaced by removing the trans. Or is it made to be pulled out like a deeply embedded molar! with pain and collateral damage?

Ford calls it the Vehicle Speed Sensor, and I would assume its available from most any auto parts store.

And the old one can be a royal pain to get pulled up out of the transmission, if it been in there for years.

after my old 80mph speedometer was tweeking out, i replaced it with a 120 mph speedometer with 6 digit odometer from the junkyard. it's been over a year now and no problems yet except for the cable is now noisy. just needs some lube.
