does anybody know if new wires and plugs will make my car idle smoother? right now it shakes somewhat and was hoping this might solve it. i also noticed that the car shakes even more with the ac on. i'm fairly sure that this is normal but just want to make sure that nothing is wrong. after all, the car is 11 years old, somethings are bound to go. back to the wires, what brand spark plug wires are good for the 1.9? not looking to spend a lot of money but looking for decent quality. are nology wires good? thanks

As long as your plugs are gapped correctly and your getting a spark to all four cylinders (you'd know if you weren't), I wouldn't count on new plugs/wires helping a rough idle. Is you idle speed correct?

my idle speed seems right, it doesn't idle too high, i just think maybe the car shakes b/c it's a small and light car. i dunno. maybe i'll take it to my mecahnic to have him check it. i'm not really worried cuase it doesn't seem to be hurting anything it's just irritating to have the car shake.

If the idle speed were too low, you might get a little roughness or shake. The correct idle speed should be posted on the label under the hood. Do you have any other engine response problems when you're at highway speed or going up hills? Any clunking during turns? Having the A/C on increases the load on your engine so if you get more shaking under increased load, I'd be concerned.

now that you put it like that i think i will get it checked. but the reason i wasn't really concerned is b/c i've read so many posts about rough idling that i figured it must be an escort thing, now i'm not so sure. is it possibly the motor mounts? or, since the ac is puttinga strain on the engine, could an underdrive pulley possibly relieve some of that strain since it takes the need to turn the compressor off of the engine? i dunno, but i thank you for all of the advice so far.

if you put it in neutral and step on the gas (just raise the rpms a little, like up to 3 grand), does it still vibrate?

If so, then your engine could be out of balance.

If not, then it could be fuel or spark, or possibly the ECU crapping on itself. 3000GT ECUs are known to sometimes kill the fuel map at random times.

i'll check it 2morrow if it still vibrates @ 3k rpm. if my memory serves me right it doesn't but i will check 2morrow to be sure. if it doesn't, than it's the fuel or spark or ecu like you said. if it's the spark then it goes back to if the new wires and plugs will fix it. if it's the fuel or the ecu then what can i do? and before i do anything, should i have my mechanic do a diagnosis first? thanks guys.
