Sometimes you just gotta let her rip

I dont know about you guys, but i'm the kind of person who drives shifring at 2000 rpm, and thinks anything over 3000 is abusing your motor. I can count the number of times I've redlined first with my 2 hands. Yea I drive granpa style

But sometimes you just gotta let her go to the red, you know make sure it still works. This morning on my way to finals, I was all juiced about it. Traffic slows down to about 40 and I decide I need to stretch the cars legs out. After I get an opening I drive at 40 for a few second to build up some distance. Then double clutch from 5th into 2nd, and this thing is off. 7k in 2nd, shift to 3rd and redline it, bam into fourth, and let off at about 6000rpm since i'm getting close to the cars in front. The advanced timing and groundwires seem to have made a pretty good difference in the acceleration, plus it got some of that finals tension out of me.

I dont know about you guys but sometimes you just gotta remind yourself of what your car can do.

Sometimes I find that I have to do that too. I drive along with it around 2500RPM for awhile, then I need to test it. Normally I need to test it if I'm at a traffic light, or there is someone beside me who is going faster. It's just coincidence.

naturally, I and probably another Deep River baby thought the thread's title meant somethig else altogether, and now feel ripped off for our clicking efforts. Be careful next time. Had we been Americans, you'd have been served your papers by now.

Yeah every once in a while I feel the need ot make sure the car hasn't mysteriously lost power... and by once in a while I mean at least once per day... hahaha. I drive pretty calmly most of the time, but on trips between cities (Riverside->Rancho or vice versa) I like to wind her out, usually no higher than 6500 though. I've only gone to 7K at th estrip, and that was only for 2 runs with some time to let her cool down as well...

Redlining isn't the best idea out there. Drive it hard, but above 5500 is just going to ruin parts faster. I don't shift unless I've hit 4000rpm (SPI), but I wouldn't dare let it touch the red. Besides, torque/hp dropoff on the 1.9L and SPI is way before redline, it doesn't really do much good to take it above that.

You ever rented a car? most people drive it like they stole it when they rent cars... It's not yours, beat the hell out of it! :p
That's the idea. People beat the hell out of cars when they rent them, but smart car thieves remain inconspicuoesesses... I can't spell. So, drive it like you rented it. :D

the best lesson form this tread.. NEVER buy a car that was a rental!..LoL... I know my firend bought the extra insurance on a car he rented, and drove it like a bat outta hell.... but it was fun, and nice knowing... it wasn't our car to worry about..haha...
last night I got stupid and decided to see if my car still had the guts to do 117(previous highest mph) and this time I got her all the way up to 120mph.... I don't like speeding above 90 on a regular basis, but I couldnt see a car light in my rear view or in front of me.. so I did it.. I'll just blame it on the boy I was with that was driving 120 on the freeway for the hell of it.... made me wanna speed... damnit!

before synchros were used, what you would do is in a higher gear, shift to neutral first, then rev up the engine (flywheel spins the input shaft faster) then shift to your lower gear. This basically gets the gears up to speed inside the gearbox and helped them to not grenade when suddenly going from like 2000rpm in 4th to 5000rpm in 2nd.

Now that synchro blocking rings are used in trannies, along with helical instad of straight-cut gears, all you need to do when downshifting is blip the throttle as you're re-engaging the clutch, so when you're re-engaged, the engine is spinning right at the speed you need it to be for smooth engagement rather than a jerky downshift, which is hard on gears, clutches, flywheels, and engines. aka rev-matching.

drive a car the way yo uwant it to be driven, you drive it all safe and grandpa style, it will scare it when its driven hard, plus you drive it hard from the get go, the car will get used to u, just not as long,

i probably hit high rpm like 4 times on teh way homwe from work, damn traffic, i drive mine hard, and she keeps on going!

Double-clutch and rev-match are not the same thing.

Rev-matching doesn't save any wear and tear on the synchros, or allow you to shift a non-sychromesh gearbox. When double clutching, you actually let the clutch out once you've shifted into neutral and then match revs for the next gear. This way you're actually influencing the speed of the transmission's input shaft. Once the engine speed (and input shaft speed) is proper, you clutch in again, and shift into the gear (usually very quickly since you've already saved the synchros the trouble).

So, Rev-matching is used while double-clutching.

If you just rev-match without double-clutching, you're only making the clutch engagement more smooth.. you're still causing the synchros to do all the work of getting the input shaft up to speed.

I drive my scort around like the pissed off go-cart it is. It doesn't feel right unless it's screaming.

Yea I use the on ramps for the Highway as my 1/4 mile track! since the speed limit is posted on a yellow sign it is legally only a suggested speed! which means you can go as fast as you want! so when ever i'm testing out something new on my car I go 2 min away to the Brock road on ramp going east since it's soo straight and is about 1/4 mile! so I wait for so that I can hit the green advance turn light so that i'm first and BAM!! Poundin back every gear till I hit 180khms by the time I get to the highway! it's awsome but my g/f bitches at me everytime I do it! ahah

Well, first a clarification for on ramp guy... even though it is yellow and is only a suggestion, you'll notice when entering a town, it will say max speed e.g. 50 unless otherwise posted if they have a highway there, or long stretches... in that case, the max speed would most likely only be 80, and switch to 100 when you hit the highway part. As for how people drive rented cars, I'm the same way. Same with my parents lease too... As for doubly clutching... I never understood it until now.. will there be any benefits with speed from doing it? And what's wrong with maxing out 4th at 100??? That's only 160km/h... and I've done that before on open stretches!

I'm just lettin ya know! didn't want you seriously thinkin that it was true and then getting burned for it. I know many people that truly believe that! What you do on your own is your own thing. But when you tell me that I can go as fast as I want and I can't... that's the problem!
