When attempting to start the Escort after a trip to the local hardware store, it made all kinds of terrible sounds. After getting it towed home, I pulled the spark plugs and found the #4 plug ground-tip bent all the way over and touching the ceramic insulator, confirming the common valve seat failure issue.

Since the car has 368K miles I'm not going to put any money into it. It's been a great reliable ride though, from Oct. '98 until now! I submitted this car to the "Cars That Last" You Tube channel several months ago (jinxing it's future perhaps!), here's the link:

The car was also rear-ended last summer and insurance totaled it. I retained salvage and probably would have kept it indefinitely because it had been such a great car over the years.

This picture sums up the irony of it's last stop:

The video wouldn't work for me. Can you sell the car to someone who'll put a bit of money, and time to fix it up?

I would follow JoesTwoWagons' advice. I have fixed up two Escorts that had swallowed the intake valve seat, and expect them to go running another 350,000 miles. The wife and I have a total of five of them, each bought when non-running due to big mechanical problem. Our last longish drive was from far south TX, up to West Seattle, to visit our grandson, and return.

Sorry the link to the video didn't work. It works in my post for whatever reason. If still interested, maybe just go to the Cars That Last channel on You Tube, the video was posted on 10/29/19. Mine was the first of five cars discussed, starting at 00:42 to 2:00.

I'm going look around locally to see if there is any interest in the car.

I would probably keep it and fix it, especially if I had your knowledge on the subject! However, we have other vehicles that need driven too. Having retired now, there just isn't much of a need any longer, sadly, for this one.

368K?! Pretty impressive. Maybe it couldn't handle the youtube fame?!

There wasn't much demand on Craigslist for it (listed at $150, sold for 100) but the Escort has a new home now. The buyer plans to replace the cylinder head and get the car rolling again. He's got experience with the valve seat issue and is going to have a great runner when it's done. Again, best car I've owned - going to miss it!

Great to hear that the new owner plans to get it running again. Maybe he'll join the FEOA.
