I am going to get a new tach for my car (3rd gen lx) and i´m thinking of getting a cluster from a zx2. The problem is the slow ford tach syndrome.
Does anyone know if there is a way to alleviate the slowness?

slowness? what slowness?

I pulled my tach of a 92 mercury sable and it roxxorz. Fast and accurate and really helps me rev-match perfectly when going into turns.

If you want the best of the best tach, get a sunpro or something, but then you ruin the "stock" look and make your car more alluring to theiving ricers.

Or you could just find a tach from a different car altogether, like a lotus, and then do a little electrical engineering and get it to work.

Oh, the 2nd gen cars don´t have slow tachs, i don´t think. but the 3rd gen escorts, the 99 and up cougars and the contours do.
Yeah, i really don´t want to ruin that stock look. Maybe i´ll get one of those 2" tachs.
Or maybe one of those tachs that are a series of LEDs that go from green to red...
that could be cool.

the led ones are kewl, but I don´t think I would ever put one in as a replacement for the needle-style tach. I would probably only stick in somewhere flashy just for looks, because you really can´t use an led style tach unless you´ve got like 500 leds, because the incriments on those things are like 500rpm, and that really isn´t accurate enough for really intenst driving when you need quick sighting of where you are and where you´re going.

I´m not sure exactly what gauges you can throw in there, but it´s gotta be possible to take a 2nd gen tach from a GT or an LX or whatnot (they use the same tach) and then just re-wire it. Ford really hasn´t changed the skeleton of the design in the newer models, only the look.

So if you want, pick up a 2nd gen tach from the boneyard (usually can be had for 5-10 bucks) and then find the signal, ground, and 12V lead, do a little thinking, and hook it up and see if you get a reading. If you do, then CUT the acrylic of the gauge to fit.

Essentially, the gauges are the same. The thing that makes it look big is the fact that you´ve got a huge faceplate, but that can be eaisly cut to fit your gauge cluster.

Then, I can send you the faces in a PSD file, you can modify them fairly eaisly, then print them out and you´ve got a custom jobbie. Would probably take an afternoon of work, but it´s more than possible if you´ve got the time.

Although, if you want, just get a sunpro and mount it up on the dash. I wouldn´t mind having my stock tach up there, because sometimes when I´m hammering through turns, the last thing I want to do is take my eyes off the road to read the tach, and little things like that make a big difference.

However, please don´t go the ricey route. Something like an autometer 3.5" tach would be more than enough for the job and would give you the speed and accuracy you want. However, you should probably take the stock gauge out or at elast disconnect it, because you may have trouble with signal loss in the tach signal wire if you split it to the two tachs simultaneously and get a low rpm reading.

Oh, yeah. I´m definately not going the ricey way. I´m as anti-rice as you can get.
There actually is no tach in the 3rd gen lx (even though its a 5 speed), so if i was going to get 2nd gen tach, i´d need to make some kind of housing for it. There is no room in the stock cluster to insert a new dial.
My brother said he found some LED tachs that are very similar to the ones used in super touring cars, but i don´t know how accurate/useable they woule be. The cool thing about them, though, is they are small and rectangle-shaped, so they would be easy to mount, yet very visible.
