i used to have a mustang that had the same exact head unit as the one in my escort, the only difference was that in the din below it was a cd player(a slave one, since it was controlled by the head unit).

my question is, did escorts ever get a CD player option, or can i find one of these slave cd players and try to wire it up?

yes, i still listen to cassettes, and i also have a cassette adapter so i can use my ipod

Since escorts are single din, you would have to find a place to mount it. You would be better off just using a walkman cd player with the tape adapter.

I believe the 2nd gens got them at some point, but I am not 100% on that. I had an OEM Ford CD player in my blue car for a while, but I can't remember if I pulled that from a Scort, or another car. The 3rd gens only had CD changers until 2003. The 2003 ZX2 had an in-dash CD player.

in 1994 you could get a factory in-dash single disk CD player. I'm assuming 95 and 96 could get it too. 97-02 had a changer option, in the trunk as Dave mentioned.
