I´m so sick of my egt. First the clutch went out then the pilot bearing went out. Then I "Got" to replace the drivers side CV and just this last weekend while heading from Las Vegas to LA (middle of the desert) My tranny went out and I "get" to replace that now. I´m seriously wondering about selling it and getting a cherokee. Are these things known for problems or is it just mine?

Fix it and keep it thats probibly the last problem you will ever have from your tranny ever. Im use to driving a 85 monte carlo I have had the same thoughts once you sell it you will regret it i really like my gt 25mpg compared to 15 taking it easy kickin the 350H.O. up at the most it would get 12mpg.

dayum, I´d love to have an EGT...

I drive a 95LX wagon and that thing is the freakin "awesomeest" road trip car you´ll ever see. No problems, ever... kick ass, always. Take care of it, and it takes care of you...

right now it´s got almost 128K miles on it and it still runs strong and smooth, with nice, powerful acceleration, cold a/c, and hot air. I absolutely love it because it gets about 41mpg highway with 3 adults in the car with cargo, and you can fold down the back seats and put in thermarests and alternate drivers, so you can literally go 24/7 and get places in no time flat.

However, my next car will undoubetly be an EGT.

Do you run your car really hard? maybe that´s the problem...

Hang in there! Look at it this way, your scort now has lotsa new parts, which should outlast the car.

As soon as I got my 91 LX this summer, I replaced the rear struts and springs, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, trans pan gasket, front rotors, water pump and timing belt. Now I have one strong running scort, never mind the car´s age or mileage. Dead reliable too.
Good luck!

Escorts are one of the most reliable cars on the road.I think if you go through and fix the problems you should be very happy with it as long as you keep up on maintenance. My pony is at like 240000 miles and the worst thing I have had to do is replace the tranny lines.Except for that and the ignition module everything else has been routine or preventatitve maintenance.Don´t give up.
Im honestly thinking of getting rid of my scort also..but Id replace it with a zx2 or something of the like...I dont know why but after thanksgiving everything just started to go on my car...timing belt went..then passanger door got jammed some how..and on the way back to school I heard some horrible clicking at high RPM´s and my windshield wiper blew off...
If you are still in school and the car is paid for, I would think twice about going into debt. Otherwise just completely ignore my motherly advice

I know what your saying about the problems man. My EGT tranny went out back in may. I had it rebuilt and the thing runs like a champ. The worst problem that i have had besdies that is my alternator went. but i think i fried it. But it´s replaced. But I don´t regret fixing it , even though it cost around 2 grand for an auto, but I know I would have missed it if I got rid of it. Hell I want another egt to work with. But also you gotta see if you can afford to do it or if you really want to go into debt if you have to. If thats the case I would reconsider on it. Just my opinions and you know what they say about them.

Just buy a beater for cheap and drive it till it croaks.Keep the scort and fix it.Man people drool on my 89 and I really haven´t put much into it.If you saw it you wouldn´t believe how little money is into it,mostly my own sick little imagination and a little bit of work. Some see a tuner while others see a rally style.Others see classic ford style cues.I just wanted something that almost everyone can appreciate.Ford Escort.
Why not buy a 2nd scort for cheap, and then fix your GT?

btw is the trans the same on a 1.8L GT as a 1.9L LX? I had to have the trans (auto) rebuilt on my 94 LX too.

Yes, the 2nd generation GT and LX share the same automatic transmision. scortGT, don´t sweat it! the 2nd gen. EGTs are great, reliable cars. you can find used trannys at very low cost in junk yards. I just bought one for my 93 for about 200 dollars and it was removed from a car with 48k miles
just remember when repairing or replacing something as labor intensive as the clutch, it´s a good idea to replace small parts that might still be in good shape but would force you to do twice the work if they were to fail. Your pilot bearing is a prefect example

BTW at 120k miles my factory tranny did not fail, i missaligned the differential side bearings and chose not to repair it, so i replaced it.

The transmissions aren´t the same

Yeah I understand completely where you´re coming from Brian. Like I told you the other day they seem all related. I know if everything isn´t perfect when doing a clutch all heck breaks loose. I´m still amazed you were able to do it without having done one before and on dirt.

I think everyone else has said what I told you too. The tranny is the last thing you´ll probably have major probs with. I´ll ask Rob and hear what he thinks might be the culprit on what caused it. If we can find out what caused the problem, I think we can prevent more problems.

BTW, I have two captain morgan golds sitting in my fridge for you and Heather. Give me a call sometime to get them
