been an avid reader, this is my first post.

ive got a 98lx with 123k.

ive had a few issues, ie: alternator, a/c compressor. replaced the alternator. removed the compressor and installed a bypass pulley.

put an aftermarket intake on before all this and saw improvements in performance, but the most recent issue has got me goin in a few different directions and was hopin for some guidance.

when maintaining a constant speed, usually right after 45 mph, the car will sputter and surge like its starved for gas, which has me thinking fuel/ignition/o2 sensor. sometimes it happens right after 35 mph, but never after 55. after 55 it'll stop the surging and sputtering, but just feels robbed of power.

the SES light is on with a P0171, and ive reset the code once without researching it.

i was thinking about changing out the wires and plugs, maybe the fuel filter, and cleaning the MAF. im just hoping it isnt the transmission.

and every now and then i'll get the rotten egg/burning smell after hard acceleration. probably a bad cat conv.

That could be a dirty MAF sensor, a bad upstream o2 sensor or even just a vacuum leak. But you said you installed an aftermarket intake. Over oiling an open filter can foul up the MAF sensor. Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor?

Once you've cleaned the MAF sensor, check for air leaks. Vacuum hose is cheap. If you need to, buy it by the foot and replace anything that looks iffy. If that all turns out okay then you can look at the upstream o2 sensor. Look over the wiring for any chafing or breaks. If the sensor is original then it should be replaced anyways.

just an update...

now the car is hesistating when shifting from stopped to first, and from first to second. it'll slip and hesitate. pretty sure the transmission is on its last leg.

wife had the transmission flushed about 6 months ago and it was having minor shifting problems then. it improved after the flush, but its back.

the shuddering and sputtering doesnt happen that often anymore, but its still sporadic.

the shifting issues have been sporadic but are becoming more frequent.

idk this shifting issue has got me all messed up. i'll start it up, and it'll run fine. then when i stop and get out to run an errand or w/e and get back in, start it up and drive, it'll have shifting issues for the rest of the drive. then after cooling down for a few hours, i'll get back in and it'll be fine. a friend of mine said something about the linkage, but idk what that has to do with an automatic tranny and shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, etc. either way i got a feeling im goin to have to spend some money down the road, ie new car vs new tranny.

That same situation happened to me I solve it by doing some heavy work but the primary things I would strongly suggest before accusing the trany are to clean the MAF, check for any vacuum leaks, and last but not least check the front damper mine had its key bent and timing was off making my escort run good when cold but like crap when at temp.
Causing the tranny to not shift properly because the lack of power.

problem's fixed... wife took the car to meineke and they flushed the fuel system, changed the fuel filter, and cleaned up the fuel injectors. the car is like new! ive got all throttle response back, it shifts like a dream, and has a new growl to it.

service engine light is still on tho...
