What's with shoe manufacturers these days and putting crazy long laces on their shoes? I was driving to work this morning and my shoelace looped my clutch pedal and literally tied my foot in a position where I could not reach the clutch! Right-foot clutching in heavy stop&go traffic while trying to pull your left foot out from beside/under the clutch pedal makes for a very unfun commute. This combined with my inability to find a comfortable pair of shoes since my old pair of Piloti DTM's wore out has finally convinced me to drop the $125 and get another pair ASAP.

So... anyone else nearly killed by footwear recently?

I have never had my laces get caught before but i have had some footwear problems recently. About a month ago i bought some new hunting boots and being in vermont they needed to have a lot of insulation so they are quite bulky in size and having big feet to begin with doesn't help much here. They do not fit between the brake pedal and the kick panel beside the gas pedal without getting caught (not safe). With that said, I have to position my right foot in kind of an awkward place in order to work the gas and brake so that my boot doesnt get stuck. I have plenty of room to work the clutch but even that can be difficult. So basically i look like somebody who has never driven a 5spd before whenever i wear them  My last pair of boots i had no problem with but they weren't really made for being out in the snow whereas my new boots are so they are a little bigger and not as flexible.

I know what you're goin through with the boots, I can't even wear winter boots while driving. I've got a pair that's nicely insulated and all, but the soles are so thick I literally can't feel the pedals at all. When I tried driving in them, I never knew if I was on the clutch until the car reacted, so no smooth shifts that winter(not a fun time to learn to drive stick). I wound up carrying both my aforementioned Piloti's and the winter boots everywhere so that I could wear the Piloti's in the car, then change to the boots whenever I was about to get out.

My shoes (Vans) won't fit properly on the brake pedal. I wear a size 13 and the tip of the shoe catches the metal arm above the brake pedal. It sucks.

Yeah thats the problem i have with the clutch, you just can't feel it at all. It's not much of a problem once im moving but in the city and hill stops are a real pita.

Having big feet certainly doesn't help when trying to drive stick smoothly. I have the same problem with boots myself. Can't say I've had issues with laces, though. The laces are actually a little short on the latest pair of cheap Nikes I picked up.

I do believe that's the first time I've seen "Cheap" and "Nikes" in the same sentence, at least without the word "not" included somewhere.

There are actually cheap Nikes, but you can't get the "Air" feature (or whatever the hell their latest techno-gadget-salesgimmick is). I bought a pair of basic Nike crosstraining sneakers for $35 at some store called The Shoe Dept. What a clever name...

Maybe I just don't have local stored that stock the cheap ones... I dunno, never cared for Nikes anyway. That said, maybe it's just the really cheap sub-$30 shoes that get overlong laces?
