i think i know what he´s talking about. My car is the same way, athough I have a 91 EGT. I "think" what he means is that when you put the shifter in first you could push it all the way over the where 5th is supposed to be, at least thats what is happening in my car. Also my shifter vibrates creating a very irritating noise unless I hang on to it. Actually my 87 EGT was pretty loose too, but not as bad. I really don´t know what causes this and would appreciate the help as much as egt89.

There are two bushings where the bottom of the shifter meets the control rod. They suck and wear out because they get exposed to all the dirt and water that gets kicked up under the car. I just replaced mine and it´s tight as hell. I lubed the crap out of it with Graphite lube, don´t use any grease because it may deteriorate the cheap plastic they´re made of. Get a new through bolt too don´t use a fully threaded bolt cause this would just chew the bushings up really fast. To protect the new bushings I grabbed a flexible rubber conduit from a door of a car from the scrapper and slid it over the lower linkage, put a 1/4 drain hole in the bottom just in case any water finds it´s way in there. Use a couple of Zip ties to seal eash end of the conduit too.

Yeah when I´m in a particular gear i can wiggle the damn shifter around. It´s loose and is probably why it´s REALLY hard for me to get into second. I´m thinkin about rebuilding my engine and I could do my transmission too. but that´s a lot more moolahs.

yeah I´ve got this problem too. I´ve got a good solid 5 inches of lateral movement when I´m in any given gear. My second gear is kinda soggy feeling, but all the rest are okay. I had the plate beneath the shifter replaced last year, and my shifting is *hella* smooth and light, but it´s still loosey-goosey feeling.

Cossie wanna-b, where is this bushing? Do you have to take anything apart to see it? Could you maybe take a pic of it next time your scort is up on the lift?

No not the ball seat! Those don´t wear out as bad as the bushings underneath here´s a pic of the diagram.

There are 4 bushings in total as circled in red the part # is E7GZ-7A133-A
The service # for the bolt that goes through the base of the shifter is 7K104 and the nut is 90901-0811
The service # for the bolt that goes through the control rod to the control arm on the transmission is #7353 and the nut is also a 90901-0811

Speaking of shifters!, I have a 94 egt 5sp. A month or so ago i noticed that the rubber mount wore out, Rubber mount being the part that holds the whole shifter assembly inplace, the piece that holds the ´ball´ part of the shifter on the bottom of the shaft. This rubber mount is connected or is part of the main black metal platform that bolts directly to the floor, When this wore out it left the WHOLE shifter assembly fall straight down, Which falls right down on the exhaust! and makes it hard as hell to shift, Its still not fixed yet correctly, i have it kinda of riged right now untill i could get the whole new metal piece that bolts to the floor like i said above, Thats the piece with the support on it that goes to the tranny. Does anyone know anything about this, of if the rubber part is replaceable?

I got the pic from the local Ferd dealership, I´ve gotten about a dozen different pics for various things I´ve worked on. Just go to Ford and ask them to print up a copy of whatever you want. First gen Escorts are very similar to the seconds for shifters.
