I just got a 99 escort LX and the shifter doesn't light up anymore
I'm talking about the PRND21 Indicator lamp. Does this circuit have it's own fuse? or could it be just a burnt out bulb? how many bulbs are in this?

anyone else run into this problem before, what should I check out first? thanks

Echo James. Be thankful - that light is nothing more than a distraction.

When three or four more bulbs burn out on your cluster, then maybe think about replacing them.

I just finished changing all my cluster bulbs right now. It's a pain...if you do decide to change it, change them all at once to save yourself some trouble down the road.

yea the shifter is actually on the floor though, how hard is it to take apart to replace the bulb?

you have to take out the gauge cluster, if you want to do it the easy, yet still just as hard way you'll have to take apart the dash. It gets involved, very very quickly.

IMO just leave it.

According to the shop manual it looks like you will need to take the centre console out to get at the bulb. At least it is the first step in changing the shifter bezel. I think the other guys thought you were referring to the light on the dash that is supposed to tell when to shift a manual trans.

You dont need to take the dash apart.James and highanddry just got off the topic there for a bit. There should be screws hold your console together on both sides of it.Just remove those to remove the trim pieces and you should be able to get at it after those are removed.
