Diane,

Thanks for the help you gave me earlier getting started with my 2nd gen EGT.

It's probably no help to you, but since the 91 Escort is the same as the Mazda Protege (Miata engine) MadzaSpeed has become a good source of parts for me.

Hope to get a chance to race you sometime next year.

Hi Dave, glad I could help a bit! You're right, Mazdaspeed can't help us much with the 1G's but I'll have to remember them to pass on to you later guys.

When do you plan on getting the car on the track? I did my (probably) only event last weekend, a double at NHIS. And drove the car home <whew>.

Didn't I see that Sentra in SCC or GRM? 8O
(Just found your Articles page, cool)

Diane, what made you decide to use a 1st gen escort for your race car?
Yep, SCC June 02. :) I never added that to the page, did I? Got some work to do!

I bought the blue car new and autox'd and time trialed it for a long time. Wanted to race it but didn't want to write off the car. Finally got a free one in 97 (a house and divorce a few years later really adds some years to ones plans!) and there ya go! Have gotten a few more since (that first free one was HIS and is now gone)

Not the most competative car out there but I know it and am comfortable in it. I know I haven't reached the cars potential yet, I dropped a full second off my lap time at NHIS last weekend with last years tires, and all we really changed on the car was the exhaust, 2.5 down to 2.25. Didn't even corner weight it and I know my corner heights were lower than last year.

Wizard Racing, I'm not that far behind you!

I try my best, been pretty busy lately so net time has been usually early and late in the day. Wish I could do this at work to keep me awake lol.

Well, off to the gym!

Hi Diane,

My first drive will be a Philly Region atuoX at Boeing this wekend 7/27 so I can get the feel of the car.
The car will have only a drivers restraint harness, front strut tower brace & 205-50-15 Kuhmo VictorRacers (bought used, I want to try the Hankook Spec Miata tire later). I'm adding parts as the budget will allow. I have an engine sponser but will not do the engine until last thing.
I doubt if I can be on the track before mid-summer next year.
I plan to go to suspension improvement & brakes next then a Quaife followed by the safety equipment then the engine.

I'm trying to get Mazda Competition to include me in their program. My plea is that the Escort is actually a Protege and that I'd put all the required MazdaSpeed/Comp markings on the car. If accepted they will discount all stock parts worn or damaged while the car is in competition or parts needed as the rules allow such as overbore pistons for the rebuild. It's a stretch but we'll see.

Does Ford have any assistance to racers? Looked everwhere (I could find ) on the web but couldn't find a thing.
Highly doubtful. Send them a letter, they used to have a racing or sponsorship department. Bet if anything it's only current Foci though.

Shame for Yellow41 - how can Ford be so short-sighted, after all today's Escort racers could well be tomorrows Focus Folk!

It really is too bad Ford doesn't back the racers, Zx2's actually have zero autox or road racing support... (I was looking for suspension parts) I was told to Buy a foci. :? I have issues with that, i own enough cars... The road racer was supposed to be a 'cheap' (use that lightly) weekend project, not a 13,000 dollar new car turned race car project. arugh. At least most escorts (barring GT's) are plentiful for the part swiping.

mazdaspeed sucks

I tried getting some parts from mazdaspeed a while back too, and looking through their stipulations, they specifically say any car with a mazda engine EXCEPT FOR FORDS... how lame is that.....

so, if you had a Kia, you'd be able to get mazdaspeed parts for the engine.....

I've heard other reports of people buying mazdaspeed parts for their escorts somehow, though, so I don't think all hope is lost. It's just gonna take a lot more effort to get them (and expense).

so instead of mazdaspeed solid motormounts, I went the 12 dollar polyurethane-filled route instead... still like to get some mazdaspeed camber plates though, for when I get my better suspension hooked up. There was an article in GRM (grassroots motorsports) that had a protege and a 2nd gen GT and if I remember, the GT had some mazdaspeed parts. so, maybe we could say, he's got them, and doesn't have a mazda, why can't you sell them to us?

anyway, that's my take on the subject...
