I drive a lot and on freeway during traffic hours i always smell exhaust from trucks, buses and other cars even when i got windows closed.

Need to know if there is driver and passengers compartment air intake filter in escort 97-02 or ZX2 and so is it really helps with this problem?

Or is there air recirculation mode setting for ventilation where it only rotates air inside car not taking it from outside?

I don't think the Escort has a passenger compartment air filter and even if it did it isn't going to filter out the exhaust smell. The only way to get it to recirculate without the A.C running is to disable the A/C system and set it to Max A/C but if its cold out (below freezing) the A/C won't run anyway so you could just set it to Max A/C and turn the heat up.

Some cars have coaly filter available, it supposed to work better for this or there is some other reason they use coal in it?

Science? Adjusting the heater settings on your car is far from that. Just set the right dial to Max A/C and the middle one to hot.

The cabin air filters found on most newer cars are charcoal impregnated to help reduce odors and allergens. Ironic thing is that most don't know they have one until it clogs and air no longer comes out the vents well. Good idea, but seeing as most early one seem like an afterthought on design, some are hard to get to. I had considered finding one and trimming and bordering to fit in my car. Mostly to keep debris from making it to blower motor wheel and causing noises, vibrations, or damage. Like the early say Honda CRV, they want you you cut out support bracket and re-secure. F-150, you have to cut the box open (provision provided-Thanks Ford!) and reseal. Ironically, the easiest one has to be the Windstar, my 4 year could change it...

third gens are interesting. every vehicle i've owned, all pre-95's have had an option for fresh or recirc on the air intake.
