Because of the problems with the AWD I have moved on to plan B.....RWD. Instead of using the 1.8 Miata motor which has the exhaust on the drivers side I have opted to use a 2.3 (bored to a 2.5) I have ordered the Pinto steering rack and mount kit so ......well to steer the car. I haven't found a 5 speed transmission as of yet but it can come from a bunch of different vehicles. Once I have the tranny the car is going to STP to have the motor and tranny installed. I'll post some pictures later when I have something interesting to show.

;) I figured RWD was plan B. Are you still planning to use the GTX rear? or are you gonna use a different axle setup?

fox body mustang LX rear axles is 4 bolt like the escort (on 108 centers, instead of 100, so you'd have to have them machined out at 90* to 100mm) but the width is right to go under the car.

Yeah the GTX rear is already in the car. I hope it can handle 100% of direct hp since it was setup for 57% to the rear. First I want to get it going and then increase hp to turn some good numbers. I'd like about 350rwhp which should make it a high 11's car. They guess if I had 450rwhp(if it could hold) it would be a high 9 second car. That is NOT what I want.....to scared.

57% of what? if your talking stock that is like 110hp. but i have seem mod'd proteges and gtx running upwards of 300awhp. so go figure. im down to see this happen. i know i have seen awd subarus' do the rwd conversion also. so the rear ends hold up. if need be cro-treat the internals.

You need to rip that gtx rear and put something else in there. It is NOT going to last. Your best bet as josh said is to use an 8.8 from a mustang with a 4-link setup of some sort.

The gtx rear uses the same ring gear/pinion/diff as the 90-93 1.6 miata. People have blown them up with stock miatas.... the ring gear is only 6 inches!!

I don't know about the Mustang rear. I would rather have and independent rear suspension than a live axle. I have seen 302 and 350 swapped Miatas running a stock rear axle setup. Is there a stronger ring gear and diff you could swap into the GTX rear? It would be easier to swap the internals then custom install a Mustang rear

Some of the v8 swapped miatas use the rx-7 rears.

heres the thing...

the guts of that rear end are the same as the 1.6 miata, but the pumpkin is 100% different.

miata guys swap to RX7 rear ends which have much stronger guts, but the outside dimensions are similar to their stock pumpkin. i dont know of any drop-in pumpkins that would work for you. you could try something out of an RX7 or an supra etc but it'll be all custom mounting. if its a drag car though... solid axle is ftw.

The 1.8 Miata is a good deal stronger than the 1.6 and the Rx-7 rear end is plenty strong for the kind of power he's looking at

The GTX and miata rear ends al are basically the same, (to a point). but las ti had talked around they were good for 200-250 WHP. so 350 will kill them.

PLus if you are setting up a drag straight line car, Id go solid rear end. Making a canyon carver, then go independent rear.

Why go pinto 2.3 grap a wrecked mazda 3 o fmazda 5 or mazda 6, there 2.3 or heck find a crashed mazdaspeed3 and get the turbo set up with it. 263 hp, 280tq to start. probably use a newer miata tranny, (could even go 6 speed.
you can make motor moutns fo rit. heck use a miata rack and pinion, it mounts in front of the motor. and the newer mazda motors moutn the exhaust on the rear fo the motors now. So the header would be on the passneger side.

Because I have the motor and it was free.

I really want to see this as you do it. I love it that you don't hear a different drummer but formed your own band!
