REPORT: Ford considering two- and three-cylinder engines

We'll see Ford's upcoming 1.6-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine show up in a number of new cars wearing the Blue Oval badge all around the world within the next few years, especially in markets that put an emphasis on fuel savings. Despite the powerplant's lilliputian size, its 180 horsepower and 170-175 lb-ft of torque will mean it's got the guts to provide more than enough power for use in small sedans and hatchbacks.

According to Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of powertrain engineering, if you think 1.6 liters is small, you ain't seen nothing yet. Speaking to Automotive News, Samardzich suggests that two- and three-cylinder engines are a very real possibility and they may only displace one liter or less (see also: VW's 1L Concept). It doesn't seem likely that Ford would outfit cars intended for American roads with such a small powerplant any time soon, but emerging markets in Europe and Asia seem like very real possibilities.

They all look sexy like that in 3d modeling software until they get built, run for 100,000 miles and leak out all your oil through the valve covers and rear main seals.

But that one's gonna have to be added to the porn gallery on mechdb.com. Or maybe I'll just copy the whole article.

I had a Fiat 500 for a couple of years. It had a 2 cylinder air cooled engine, of 500 cubic centimeters. It was big enough to seat me plus another adult, and a bag of groceries. I didnt need to take it on 4 lane highways much, nor on long trips. It was fun around town though & gave great gas mileage. Like all Italian cars I have experienced, it rusted away fast. Its the only car I have had where I could push the clutch pedal to the floor with my thumb.

Later I had a couple of Saab 96 sedans. They were 3 cylinder 2 cycle engines, of 750cc. You put a quart of oil into the fuel tank followed by 8 gallons of gasoline. They had great traction on snow, had good heaters & comfy seats. I had put about 70,000 happy miles on one of them when I was rear-ended at a stop light by a guy in a full size Mercury. My Saab got shoved across the intersection and spun around 270 degrees. It didnt have headrests, but the seat bent back enough that I wasnt injured at all.
I recall it gave me about 30 mpg on the highway.

And they will be used in USA, unlike that ignorant blog states. I don't know wtf they're talking about Ford hasn't even said anything about Asian markets. It's right there in the image, all of the facts directly from Ford. Hence I made an article out of it:

http://mechdb.com/index.php/Ford_EcoBoost_engine

And not only that but it's going to come in many various sizes, to replace V8 and V6 engines. It's really nothing special, just has direct injection and a turbo, about time they've done this.

Btw, I changed the hue to red :).

i just want to know why they just won't give us the 1.6L and 1.8L turbo's here in the states? I mean think of the mpg they would get plus all that usuable turbo power. Here in the states it always seems to be about the power out put but they never seem to want to improve on the 4 cyclinder engines. So what they crank out 500hp on a V8. That not impressive because the do that all the time in europe and on pump gas at that to. Let see a v4 get 500hp. I know that is redonkuless but would be very impressive for a production car.

Yeah but they are going to deploy it, just have a look at the article I put, I wrote out everything they had in the image talking about it's use. It's supposed to arrive only in a few years, supposedly they're already preparing for it's production in the Cleveland (I came from there btw) plant.
