How many quarts does the 5 speed manual take? And where is the fill port?

fill port is on the front of the trans, its above the reverse switch.. its a slightly smaller than 1inch, same size as the drain plug.. you really cant miss it. i think the fluid capacity is around 3.4-4 quarts. oil will pour out when it is full.

I thought the 2nd gen transmissions didn't have a fill plug. You have to fill them from the speedo sensor.

Yeah that. The bottom of the speedo sensor is also the full indicator. Any manual will show what 'full' looks like

Follow the speedo cable from the firewall, it takes you right to it. Pretty basic.

Manual transmissions use gear oil. Automatics use Dexron, Dexron fluid is hydraulic, which 5spd transmissions are not.

On the contrary. Ford 5-speeds use ATF fluid. There are other threads on this. You could always read the manual.

You can use gear oil but you need GL-4. GL-5 has an additive that eats brass which is what the syncros made of. Unfortunately, almost all gear oil is GL-5. To get GL-4 you would have to buy Royal Purple, Redline, or AMSoil which are over $10 a quart. Its much cheaper to buy some Dextron III/Mercon.

Oh, and start looking for a new speedo sender right now to save your self some time. Yours is seezed, and you'll break the top plastic peice off trying to get it out.

Not everyone breaks off seised ones Jeff! The fluid in my Red car hadn't been checked in 10 years when I got it. Unbolted it, took a pair of pliers, wiggled it left and right to unsieze the metal, then took a pair of vice grips and attched them snug to the metal part and pried upward gently til it popped loose 8O Thought you would try that. Did it all from the top.

Hi Yall I have a problem, for some reason I can not start out in first gear and get a gringing sound when i try but 2nd 3rd are fine i want to fix what ever it is its a good car i paid 300 for it in march

I know transmission fluid is what is recommended for use in Ford manuals, but I've been running gear oil in my '88 for years and probably about the last 300,000 miles. The only problem I've had is it's a little stiff to shift on cold starts in the winter time.
