Hello all

How difficult is it to replace the steering rack on a 88 escort? When the front end of the car lifts up during acceleration the car will veer towards the drivers side badly. I hear a clunking sound when I grab the drivers side wheel and move it back and forth - I also see the tie rod move in and out of the rack.

Can someone give me an idea how tough a job this is?

Thanks
Jim

Torque steer is causing the veering, although there may be other issues as well.

Tie rods can be replaced, inner and outer.

Cluncking, which way are you moving the wheel, top and bottom or side to side?

Top & bottom is a wheel bearing, side to side is probably tie rods.

Good Morning Diane

I jacked the car up last night. It looks like it is either the inner tie-rod or the steering rack. I have power steering. How tough is it to replace the rack? A friend said that if the shop has a special tool - there is no need to remove the steering rack just to replace the inner tie-rods ends. That would be good if it is just a inner tie-rod end.... I looks like it is a tight fit to remove all the hydraulic lines from the rack...boy oh boy it looks tight. Looks like the exhaust has to come off. Has anyone been through this? Thanks for the replies

The more accessories you have, the harder it is to reach many of the lines. Replacing the rack is not fun. I dont think you need special tools to do either the rack or the inner tie rod but don't hold me to that.
