OK, the car my wife bought me (ain't she sweet!) is a '96 LX w/mtx, with only one known problem: it won't shift into reverse! The lady I'm getting it from just had a mechanic put a new clutch in, (because he told her that would fix it! 8O ) but when he was done he still couldn't find reverse. But he DID charge her $1100 for his services! Anyway, I'm assuming that it would be a good idea to go ahead and drop the tranny and see what kind of work he did. This isn't a problem, I've done this a couple of times before on 'Scorts. However, I also know that the dear sweet lady's hubby (who is now institutionalized, and was capable of spectacular "4th of July" level rage episodes) might have bent/broke/mangled something once while trying to find reverse, so I'm prepared to tear the transmission apart. The question is, is there a rebuild kit (bearings, seals, synchros) available for this transmission? Where do I get it? Anything special I need to know about the inside of this transmission? Eventually I expect to put a slightly warmed 2.0 Zetec into the car. Any special tricks that this transmission needs to live with more power?

When I needed some parts for the auto tranny in my 92 Escort, I went to ebay. I searched for outfits selling rebuild kits and transmission hard parts, then sent them emails asking if they had what I needed. Some of them might also have parts for the manual transmissions. Also doing a google search for '+manual +transmission +hard +parts'. The plus signs force the search engine to only return sites having all of the words in them.

Actually, I have found my own answer and just want to put it up FYI.
The designation for the 2nd gen transmission is M5TX. googling that gives all sorts of info about my transmission!
