ok so I am putting new struts on my 1994 escort wagon and I found broken springs. after speaking with some shops around town evryone tells me that escorts are common to break rear springs. I this true?? If so I would like to put a heavier spring on but all the springs I look at will lower the vehicle and I dont really want to do that. Can any of you help with this problem.

I'd recommend Eibach for spring replacements, stiffer, and the drop isn't that severe (1"). Not sure if they'd fit on the struts you bought though, what kind did you get?

I believe the reason our springs are prone as such (what I was told when mine broke) is because they have rubber at the ends, and water can get trapped inbetween said rubber and spring and rust/break it. That's what happened to mine, at least.

Yes, it's entirely true, as already alluded to here.

I don't buy the moisture trapped in the rubberized coating theory.

The OEM springs are just poor. They ride hard, yet still break. Crappy build.

Because I am extraordinarily lazy, I rode with broken rear springs for a long time. I replaced them with OEM springs and the ride is just as hard. What's the lesson? Dunno.
