Nope, but they can come in handy if you have wagon springs or aftermarket springs. Separate the knuckle from the strut, then separate the trail link from the bottom so you can pivot the control arm down far enough to free the spring out. If it seems to have good tension on it while you pivot the control arm down be prepared to catch it and don't hurt yourself with it. If in doubt you can always use a compressor, stock springs are soft enough to compress with a shoe string if it helps haha
