Is it a periodic or random banging sound? Periodic sounds (at regular intervals) are often related to a rotating object (i.e. wheel) and chaotic (random) sounds are often non-rotatingly related.
But if I were you, I´d jack the wheel up, and then grab the wheel and try to "twist" it in the CAMBER direction. This will check the tightness of the ball joints. Then try twisting in the TOE-IN direction. This will check for play in the tie rods.
Chances are that if it´s periodic, it´s either in your wheel bearing (which I don´t think it is) or it´s your CV joint. Bad CV joints often have banging sounds when they **** the bed.
