I have a 92 Ford Escort GT. When I fuel up, I smell raw fuel vapors in the interior of the car for one or more days afterwards. It seems to be strongest in the front portion of the interior. I suspected the fuel tank/pump cover under the rear seat, but it is not as strong in that location. I can find no leaks underneath. I have checked all the lines and the injector sockets. I have looked for small leaks near the firewall. Nothing. If anyone has had this problem and found the source, I could use your help. Thanks. It´s been a while since I posted. It took a while to figure out the revised site.

When you fill up do you cram as much gas in the tank as you can, or do you stop at the first click??? The reason I ask is because if you do cram every last drop into your tank some of the fuel may be making its way throu the vent line into the Evap canister. I´m not sure where exactly it is located on the 2nd gen Scorts, but on the 1st gen the Evap canister is just behind the front bumper on the drivers side. I used to have the same thing happen to me and that is what I concluded it was. The Evap canister has a filter in it that will absorb the fuel and cause you to smell it until either the fuel evaporates off of the filter, or the canister gets purged a few times by the emissions system. next time you get that smell see if you can find the canister and give it a big whiff.

i´d get that smell every now and then, but i realized eventually it was because i stepped in some gasoline at the station and brought it in my car. its worse when its raining or snowing, it gets everywhere.

This is happening because when you fill up, gas is leaking out of the fuelpump access. the gas smell probably goes away when the tank goes down to 1/2 or maybe 1/4 full right? Next time you fill up, remove the back seat and then remove the 4 screws that hold the cover to the pump acces so that you can check if it´s leaking. you might need to have the o-ring that seals this replaced.

I hear it is illeagal to pump gas in Oregon to. What the Fux up with that?? How is someone gonna tell me I can´t pump my own gas?? How the hell do I know they aren´t ripping me off some how?? Next thing you know they´ll make it illeagal to change your own oil. Does gas cost more up there due to the fact they have to pay people to pump it? What if there is a rush and they don´t have enough people to fill all of the tanks?? Then what?? Do you have to just sit there an wait until someone can fill your tank and tell the boss when you get to work "I had to wait for someone to fill my tank." Sounds pretty cheezy to me. I have no problems with full service and letting someone fill my tank if I am not in a hurry, or if I´m on the phone, but I would like to be able to fill it myself if I need to or really wanted to.

It´s illegal to pump gas in Oregon because of the flamability of it. It´s stupid yeah i know, but the funny thing is if you go to Oregon and ask someone how to work the gas pumps they´ll look at ya like what the hell is a gas pump? lol Studies show that explosions are more likely to happen to a woman pumping gas because women are more inclined to get back into their car, which causes static electricity which can ignite gas fumes. Here in Indiana (dunno about everywhere else) you can get a 500 dollar fine if you walk away from your car while you´re pumping gas and it spills on the ground.
