When I replaced my radiator last December I removed the worm type clams that a stupid mechanic installed and put in some spring type clamps I harvested at the JY, and they are still doing just fine.

If only it werent so hard to salvage the larger spring clamp from the water pump inlet, on Escorts in a junkyard!

I didn't even try to get that one. I was only doing the ones for the radiator since I did not want to break the plastic radiator connections. I'm really not worried about a worm clamp breaking the ends at the thermostat housing and water pump. Or do you think I should? I do have an extra for the thermostat housing if I ever have to remove that end for some other reason.

Ever determine if it's a 24 or a 27 for the smaller hose that goes to on the thermostat housing?

Nope. That hose seemed slightly thicker than the ones going to the heater core, which could explain then being a 27.

OK. I can always make a measurement with the hose on and no clamp and report back at some point. That and report back the OD of the outlet hose as a reference.

You would be correct. The hose that goes to the heater core is 5/8", and the clamp is stamped 24. The other end of that hose us plugs into the sensor end is 3/4", so your 27 size is probably also correct. Note that some Ace hardware stores stock spring clamps, so replacing the 24 with a Hillman 15/16 should work. I don't know of any place that would stick larger sizes, unless you want to buy in bulk.

I found a source for larger clamps, via ebay. Searching for "constant tension hose clamps". The problem was getting the correct size of clamp, having enough clamping force. I still dont know how they specify the sizes; whether on hose size, or the expanded diameter of the clamp, etc.

Spotted a 27 on a spring style hose clamp my 1999 V6 Alero. It's on the hose between the radiator and the radiator overflow tank, on the overflow tank end (the radiator end might be the same). So lots of GM cars have at least one of these. The 24's can be gotten from heater hoses on a Focus where it connects to the heater core.
