either blew the head gasket or broke some rings but either way I need to tear down the 1.9 in my 95 escort.

Just curious if there are any other heads like maybe the 2.0 head that might swap right on top of the 1.9 engine. If not then I'm just going to pull the valves and clean/lap them and pop the head back on after checking for warpage.

and no, a complete engine swap is not do-able at this time even though I have access to 2.0's.

Yeah you can swap on a 2.0 head onto the 1.9 But you'll need the intake manifold, IMRC's, and fuel rail from a 97 if you do it. It's also rummored to lower compression so it might not be super benifficial unless you plan to turbo.

the 1.9 has cupped pistons. the spi has dome top pistons. it will lower the compressin to about 8.9:1 ish. ya youll need the intake, imrc, and the fuel rail.its always a good idea to get your head surfaced before puting it on.the 1.9/spi hybrid hasnt been played with much but its a good idea... direct swap.

So far there has been NO REAL proof of this swap.only talk.Theory saiz yes it should work.and just by shaving the head should compensate for the compression loss. But now you would have Bigger Valves and split port intake, being way more beneficial to power. The person that claimed to have done it(cant remember the name)Said the powerband changed and overall it was a very good swap. The sad thing is that there was no proof of it being done(the boards went down before proof arrived)Some other guys have said that there is a rough idle invoved ,but overall it is a worthy swap.(then again no real proof of it being done)
If you can find a 97 head with intake for cheap I say go for it.You draw your own conclusions and decide.

getting any spi or spi parts on a 1.9 to idle with the 1.9 computer is hard enough at first anyway. it should be able to figure it out though. its not that much of a differnce.

ok, so what is the imrc? is that some sort of extra electronics? I think I remember reading that it was some sort of controller for the intake manifold or something like that?

why do you say specifically a 97 model? there were no 2.0's available from 91-96 and the heads/intake/etc wouldn't work from them?

It just makes more sense to me to use parts from the same obd-1 era and not from later obd-2 era as more things could be different...maybe thats why he had the bad idle problem?

the other reason I ask is because my parts yards:

http://www.pullapart.com has the stuff cheap but any of the extreme late model cars will be parted to the ground basically the day after they get out there.

lol, you're on turboford also. should have known, your cardomain site was the one that gave me the idea for this actually.

I just couldn't remember whos site it was so I couldn't locate it again.

so basically any late model 2.0 head/intake the controller for it and the fuel rail. doesn't sound bad, just hope that 98 in the yard still has the engien in it haha.

oh yeah, this brings up one more question just in case I cant get hold of the 2.0 stuff. The engine in my car is a 98 1.9 and it has the 98 1.9 throttle body. You say the tps is different for 96+ I'm wondering if this is why the car cuts off in park when it's idling sometimes??

edit: oh I dont know if its universal or not but we didn't have to splice the harness for the tps to use in our escort.
