i know this topic has been done before, but it seems like no one got a response i am lookin for, i am wondering what engines can be swapped in a 97 lx, with out special mounting hardware or anything like that. from what i understand, a focus zetec doesnt fit, but are there any differences between the focus zetec and the ZX2 zetec, other than the mounting spots? and are there any differences between the trannys?

If a ZX2 has the Zetec, then why doesn't it go in an LX? I know it isn't an answer, sorry, I thought it goes. Lots of guys are tuning their 2.0 spi, it must be the best overall choice.

it may be a chore, but I am sure I have seen zetecs in 2 gen lx...so it would stand to reason that it would fit a 3gen lx, they are not that much diffeent under the hood for dimensions and mountings...but the real work would prob be the wiring and other goodies that make it run

I guess my question is why not..do just because if you are set on doing a transplant...besides I have always preferred two cams to one

alright thanks for the info. i was driving a focus (auto trans)the other day and i noticed that it gets goin quite a bit faster than my escort. i've just started to get into cars, so i dont kno too much. so i was hoping if i could get that engine/trans then i could get going faster. but if there is a way i could get the same results out of my SPI then that would be way better than havin to swap engines.

I don't think the 2.0 Zetec is a direct bolt in into a 2.0 SPI chassis. Two different motors with two different transmissions as far as I know. (I could be wrong) But the 2.0 SPI has TONS of potential of itself, which is why you see plenty of people swapping them into 91-96 LXs.

Ok I was thinking Focus Zetec when I thought it wasn't a direct bolt in, and I was right. coo coo

A'ight, by Jeff's word here, get a ZX2 dohc Zetec motor. You get 20 horses off the swap easy.

well i seem to be having alot of trouble with finding some performance parts for my SPI. anyone know where to get some stuff?

well...what is so cool about swapping the 2.0 SPI in the 2nd Gen Escort is that is like almost plug and play...you have to modify things here and there but nothing major...and you don't need to swap the tranny too..which is cool cauz i'm pretty sure the tranny mounts are different from the Zetec to the Spi or SEFi engine....

Now i only have to find a good low mileage 2.0 SPI before the winter is over...i now its early hehe but hey... i want to be able to swap it next spring and i would like to take it apart before to make sure everything is ok, clean and freshly painted :p
