Looking to replace the cardboard-cutout speakers in the back of my '96 LX escort hatchback. They are 5x7 speakers and will not accept a 6x8 (believe me, I tried).

I'm seeing some cheap "Pyramid" and "Legacy" branded speakers on ebay. I'm an average Joe who listens to mostly classic rock. I tend to skip songs with OONTZ OOONTZ in them, but I really like well-defined bass without distortion at normal (not really loud) volumes.

Are these brands okay for this purpose? I've never heard of them before.

they both suck, you have to pump alot of watts into them, and they give u bad disortion. If i were you, go for something like audiobahn up on there, most of the electronics on ebay are refurbished but if u just want something nice for cheap i would look for some audiobahn speakers that would fit, or kenwood, or sony or something but legacy n pyramid will sound like crap. You should be able to find a nice brand for cheap on ebay, cuz like i said most are refurbished, But refurbished still works real good, same thing if you ask me.

I recently bought a 6" Pyramid 300W subwoofer off EBAY for $8 !!!!!

I can say with confidence this is the best audio component for the price i have ever bought. I'm running 200W with a subwoofer crossover and low-pass filter into it and it sounds super clean. It is located between the driver's and passenger's seat in a tubular box ported onto the back seat. (a bass tube if you will) So i hear every noise it makes and it is all good.

The majority of my listening is Drum and Bass. if anyone know's the nature of the music they can tell you the subwoofers are worked HARD.
I have only been using it for 4 weeks but i've loved every mokment of it.

So i say Pyramid is well worth the cheap prices on ebay.

Audiobahn is just as bad as pyramid and legacy, they just look better. Get something like inifinity, kenwood, focal, polk, kicker, etc. Speakers are one of those things that you get what you pay for (ie cheap= crappy speakers).

Thanks for the great advice on the pyramids and legacys. I thought it was too good to be true.

Annoying thing is, I need 5x7 in the back and not many manufacturers touch that size for under $100. This is probably going to wait a while though as I suspect I have a tranny leak.. Eventually, though, it will happen.

Any advice on a reasonably priced/decent speaker for the back? I can't really spend more than like $50 for it or my girlfriend will nag me for years...

I'm quite sure you can get some 5x7 Alpines for under $100 US. They're ok.

No matter what anyone tells you, remember that speakers are a subjective thing. If you like them, then who cares what anyone else thinks.

Bad news,

My escort came with the so-called "Premium" sound. It's really just a set of 4 paper cones made by "Jensen". If I had to describe the quality of their sound, I would compare it to the sound a "personal massager" would make if you put it on high and set it down on top of a conga drum.

I had that "premium sound package" too... The jensens were okay, up until they started to disintegrate. I have a set of 6.5" Blaupunkts that I won at an auto Show in the door panels of my car and some Kenwood 5x7's in the rear. I got the rears for around 50-60 Bucks American. Although I did buy them like 4 years ago. I haven't had any problems or copmlaints with the Blaupunkts, but that's just because I haven't listened to anything nice other than my Ex's Jetta. (which had great sound) But I have heard my brother's Alpines recently and they were dang nice. I would reccomend Kenwood though if you can find a cheaper pair of 5x7's they should suit you fine. Just stay away from Sony Xplod's. they suck. Best of luck. And by the way, My brother loves classic rock so the Alpines I heard were ringing the sweet sounds of Led Zeppelin and Van Halen when I helped him put the back of his Scort back together.

Yeah the 'premium sound' cars didn't all come with the same type of speakers, and it changes from year to year. Mine came with a CD changer, 2 way paper cones that sounded good for about a year (until, like Misfit said, they disintegrated...) and I replaced them with new pioneers. :\ Sounds fine.

Yeah when I took my "premium" paper cones out they were all warped. Looked like an aerial view of the rocky mountains.

Got me a pair of used Pioneer TS-A5715's off ebay that turned out to actually be the TS-5713's. Not as good. As an added bonus, one of them is busted.

The guy refunded my money and let me keep em but they sound like garbage now.

Definately looking at those Kenwoods you mentioned, misfit...
