Evidently the defroster in my Tracer doesn't work. May go to the JY and pull one. How hard is it to pull the dash?

In all my second gen Escorts the defroster switch just pops out of the dash?

There are at least two different styles, the older ones press down and the newer ones press in. You'll know the difference if you see them both. I think you have to remove the dash trim bezel to get either one out.

In a 2nd gen, the defroster switch is held into the bezel by two little screws, reached from behind with the bezel removed. And it has to be disconnected from the wiring harness, which involves holding down a clip to do that.
To remove a 2nd gen bezel, I find I have to drop the steering column. Its held up by 4 bolts taking a 12mm socket. Sort of hard to see unless using a mirror though. I kneel beside the driver's door to do it.

you can get the bezel out without droping the wheel. i think there are 7 7mm bolts and the thing can be twisted out.

It's T-15 Torx on the lower left, lower right, and above the speedo. You won't be able to fully remove the panel without dropping the wheel, but if you're only pulling the defroster switch, you should have space to get a screwdriver on it.
