Problem with fuel pump (95 escort lx)

207 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Joey_Twowagons
I have my 95 escort LX back at home. It’s only got 65k and runs great for the most part. Only problem is the fuel pump stopped working this January. I was getting a new car anyway, so I just parked it. I want to get it up and running now though. I’ve looked for a long time online for where the relays would be for the fuel pump, but couldn’t find much. I don’t want to mess around and put in a different fuel pump and still not have it work. Any input is very much appreciated!!

What diagnostic tests have you performed?
I checked under the seat by the fuel pump and with a multimeter I was getting some voltage. I think it was like 8-10 volts. I just don’t know what else to do without first checking the relay, but I don’t know which one is for the fuel pump!! Reason being why I don’t want to replace the pump if that’s not what’s bad, is the locking ring on top of the tank is all rusted/corroded on.
A good way to test fuel pumps is to disconnect the wiring and apply power from a cordless tool battery.
I have resuscitated "dead" fuel pumps by giving them a jolt backwards and forwards with 18 volts.
I think this is safe for a few seconds.

Of course you have to figure out the wiring, there's five wires to the fuel pump module in these cars, IIRC.
If I find my little sketch of the connector I'll post it here.

Thank you, I’ll have to try that!! I believe there are 5 wires. I was nervous to try applying voltage to the connecter, in case something would spark. I don’t really know much about the fuel systems on cars.
I think the wires are red black and yellow. The yellow is the fuel level sender, and it would probably be bad to put power (or ground) to it. I think there are doubles of the power and ground, which is why a total of five wires.

Thank you!!! I’m gonna try going home to it next week Friday, I will let you all know! :))
I got it working!! I tried to power the pump externally, and it still wouldn’t run. Replacing the fuel pump indeed brought it back to life! Thank you all!!
