As far as I know, the freeze plugs for all 2nd gen LX escorts are the single 2-3/16" for the end of the block (accessible after the flywheel is removed) or the four 1-3/8" size for the others. Dorman sells the small ones as p.n. 555025, and the large one as p.n. 555051, both being made of steel.

With my Escorts, I have replaced the OEM plugs with new steel ones from Dorman. I figure they should last another 20 years. The originals all lasted that long or longer; and had not begun to leak 'yet', though some looked bad from the inner side. On one of the engines I neglected to replace them, so am worried that one will start to leak someday.

So far no leaks on any of the OEM heads. Most of mine now have rebuilt heads - and I hope the rebuilder took care of the couple of small freeze plugs in the heads.

Coolant was ok as I changed it.about 3 years ago I had to do a freeze plug under the exhaust manifold as it was leaking. The car was kinda neglected before I got it. This past spring I noticed I'd have to check coolant often. 2 Thursday ago is when I fixed the one leak and started another. Been doing that since.
I did a flush and that's when others appeared. I had rust pieces come out of peacock valve. I'm going to replace as many plugs as I can with brass
I'm going to drop trans today
