Doing it yourself, or having a shop do it? you're looking at 3k plus to take it to a shop and say "replace my trans" but if you get a junkyard trans and do it yourself, less than 500$

For my 1995LX, I've been quoted numbers as high as $2300 + tax, and as low as $1700 + tax for a shop to do it. That's for them to install a factory rebuilt transmission with I don't know how many Chinese or rebuilt parts in it. Places like http://www-car-part.com show low mileage ones for a low as $400. My local U-pull-it sells them for about $100.

R+R an automatic trans. pays about 5 hours at most shops. So at current rates your looking at close to $450-$500 in labor alone. If possible, do it yourself, or a friend. Pulling transmissions on these are pretty straight forward, but you will need an engine brace when removing mounts. Safest and best way.

Exactly what's wrong with the existing transmission? If you take it to a shop, the only fix they will do is to rebuild it. There is only a tiny % of shops that will actually fix a problem. Perhaps you can fix it yourself.
