from the other posts, I think this guy has an LX...

Make it breath better.... best place to start is a new exhaust, 2.25" for non-turboed cars, maybe a new exhaust header, new intake, and possibly advancing the timing a little to get better low end torque.

weight reduction... get the seats out, all the plastic fluff, everything. I´ve got a 95LX wagon and I´ve gutted out a good amount of stuff and it´s suprisingly quick. However, even with a passenger, the difference is pretty large... so lose the weight and you´ll see a big difference.

You could also throw on a turbo, but the LX isn´t really worthy of a turbo... I mean, the LX is an economy car and to really throw a ton of cash into it is just a waste. Either get a GT (like I did) and turbo/supercharge it or find yourself a different car or something like a porsche 944 or a MR2 or something...

You´ve got to realize that the escort isn´t a muscle car... you can make it more snappy to drive with a few tricks, but you´ll never be able to really haul ass with the stock internals.

I dunno if he gets a 2nd gen GT model with forged internals he could throw a turbo on that and put probably 7 psi safely on it and make it a bit more than just "snappy" to drive. ;-) I think my GT is pretty snappy in itself, and it´s bare bones stock under the hood. it looks like shit but f**k it´s my car damnit. stop making fun of it Jeremy! :-Y :-Y Thats my brother. he´s a bastard :p He´s just jealous cause he bought his wife a new car and he never gets to drive it. sucks to be him! LOL :-]

you could easily run 7psi on a bp engine, I have seen one that has been rebuilt and is running 35 psi and has over 450 horsepower, it ran an 11.4 quarter mile in an mx-3. But yes for the price its going to cost you in the end to get the high horsepower out of a small engine you could just buy the big one. lol

Yeah I meant with the stock 1.9L sefi. You can´t do a whole bunch with it.

If you want power, get a camaro. I like the GT because it can get pretty decent gas mileage if you set it up right, it handles great, it´s light and snappy, and it´s just plain fun to drive. I´m 18 and I don´t know about you guys, but I don´t feel like shelling out the money to support a 6mpg car. I mean, in the 60´s and 70´s muscle cars were the thing, but if you lighten up your ride and throw on a turbo and a nice suspension setup, you get something that isn´t necessarily a torque-monster, but still has some balls and can hold its own. This is the kinda car that I like. Like a turbo´d GT or an imprezza WRX or the like. Kinda like snappy rally type cars.

And yes, I´ve heard of people running 30+psi on the mazda BP engine (the stock engine in the EGT)

BlackMX-3 has a point on the whole "dump money into the small engine to make it rip ass like a big engine that is N/A".

You may want to consider going with a 6 cylinder car, because to get the hp´s out of the small engine, you´ll need a lot of boost or the like...

Now what I like are turbo´d first gen RX-7´s... man those are hella hella hella quick cars. Power to weight ratio is amazing... like a rodent jacked up on steriods :)

Comon people!!! Forget the speed!!! If you zoom bye (mazda zoom zoom pun intended) no one will sweat your car as much as if you creap by them bouncing up and down with only three wheels on the ground... ;-)

I disagree. Let´s not discourage our friend!
I´ve come across plenty of reasonably fast LX´s on this site, and more still at EscortRacing. I don´t know the technical requirements to turbo a 1.9L, but it´s been done, and supercharging is an option too. There are a lot of less drastic mods to the stock engine which will add up to a significant increase in power too. Then there´s the option of doing an engine swap, if not right now, then somewhere down the road.

If you have a primo LX you love, it makes more sense to mod it than to sell out and buy a worn out rust bucket of a GT. No offense to all of you with GT´s! True they have more power etc. stock and are somewhat easier to mod. I just haven´t found a clean, low mileage GT around for sale.

The LX is only an economy car if you perceive it that way, and it has plenty of potential to be improved!

BTW, 95EscortSittinLo has a VERY nice LX 4dr sedan. Already has a bumpin system in it too. It´s a sweet ride and definitely worth sticking with!

Hang in there, man! :p

Yeah I realized that my LX just suxored and even though it´s in great mechanical shape and doesn´t have much rust at all, it´s slower than slow and I just decided to buy a GT to work on. It was old - 133,000 miles, and has a significant amount of rust and a fair share of problems... many of which I have already fixed and am currently in the process of fixing. Still, I´m the kind of person who believes that it is always better to start off with a good platform and work your way from there, rather than to start with something that won´t hold up in the end.

It´s kinda like building your computer with an outdated motherboard... you may be saving the cash in the beginning, but if the parts on the mobo are better than the mobo itself, then you´re kinda outta luck...

but yeah, it´s possible to supercharge/turbocharge an LX, although the internals aren´t as robust as the 1.8L mazda BP´s, so you would probably kill your engine pretty quickly if you tried to push 30+psi into it... however, you could run a small amount of boost safely, like 8psi or so, but even then you have to weigh exactly how much power you´ll get in the end to how much work you´ll have to put into the car to get that power...

my personal theory with my lx is that it´s fun as h377 to autoX iwth :-D sure, a gt would be sweeter, but that might put me into another performance class in some places, and a couple simple ´bolt-on´ type mods (exhaust, intake, soon suspension) will do just awesome for what it´s worth, until i swap in a turbo´ed SVT Zetec engine in sometime down the road :-] until then, a taste of a sports car which can have a lot of show potential (i´m still prying my cousin´s car place for a pic of they´re supposed Scort body kit)

i you want more power i suggest you do an engine swap, i had a 1.9 in my 96 escort and i put in a 2.o from the 97. the computer is the same and everthing drops into place, and it will also give you the option to turbo it. As well as giving you 30hp from the 1.9..

For exhaust you will find at least two camps . 1 the full custom exhaust people and 2 the catback people . you can go either way depending on your finances and preferances .on the full custom you can more closely monitor how much quality goes in . this will directly affect the sound in the end . with a commercial cat back system you seem to work with whats available and try to find one that is to your liking . at least this is my simplistic understanding of subject . I`m favoring a cat back system for my own reasons but its a bit down the road yet .
