My 95 Escort LX won't start. I hear nothing when I turn the key and I have tried jumping it. My questions are : What is the likelyhood that the starter has gone bad? Is there a Starter fuse and where is it located? And is there any other thing it could be?

I would appreciate any input. (I'm hoping that I don't have to buy a new starter)

It's on your steering column, between your lock cylinder (the piece you put your key into) and the gauge cluster/dash.

Check the fuses under your hood too. They'll also be in a black box.

.. and beat your starter with a hammer, but since it doesn't even click when you turn the key, this probably won't help.

Do LX's have starter selonoids?

If he doesnt hear the fuel pump coming on when he puts the key to ON, then the ignition switch is probably the cause. Either that or both the engine and fuel fuses (I think there are two) died simultaneously, which is unlikely.

When you put your key to the on position, can you use any electronic devices (lights, anything?)

If the car is a automatic, try to start it in neutral. It may just be the neutral start switch. If there is still nothing. Run a wire to the solinoid on the starter. You want to hook it to the small wire that is there. That is the trigger. Just touch it to the positive battery terminal. If you still dont hear any thing. It may have lost its ground. Hook a set of jumper cables to your negetive battery post and the other end to the case on the starter. If it starts then. You will have to clean up and replace your ground cables.
Good luck.

My logic:

if he's tried to jump it (i.e. a known-to-be-good battery on his system), and he still cant hear ANYTHING when he puts the ignition switch to on, I'm led to believe that the swich is deffective. Accessories should come on when it's on acc, then when it's on ON, the fuel pump kicks in, along with stuff like the wipers, etc, and when in start, the starter relay and solenoid start doing their thing.

Sounds like the switch to siragan.

I gave it a long look today. There is a solenoid on top of the starter and it looks like the small wire connection has corroded. I'm starting to think that the wire to the solenoid doesnot have a good connection to the solenoid. When I turn on the car with the key, I get power to all systems except the starter. If I wanted to I could listen to the radio and run the A/C at that time. I will try the wire trick and let you know what happens.

Yeah I had the same problem...I could not get to school one day beacause my shifter said it was on park, but it really was not it was on reverse. The battery was fine I could listen to the radio the electrical systems were on. So, try putting it in neutral like some people said because that is how I get my car started in the morning. Or force it into park push it up more.
