well, to do that yourself you´d have to COMPLETELY tear down your engine...and then you´d have to COMPLETELY rebuild your engine, which could take A LOT of time. I had a shop do mine and it cost me 1000 dollars, but this shop sucks ass and it took them 2 f***in weeks to do it. if you´re really engine savvy...do it yourself, if not...let a professional do it.

and after it´s done you can´t go rev happy, you have to let the rings sit, if you rev the hell out of it the rings will come unseated and you´ll have to do it again.

I suggest checking the valve cover seal and the oil pan seal. If you don´t see any leaks, then it´s probably the rings on the pistons that have gone bad.

To break down the engine is a huge job. Tons of money, I´d assume. I had a friend who did an engine rebuild on a ford bronco and they dropped 3,000 smackers for it.

I´m planning on rebuilding my 91 GT engine (the 1.8L mazda BP engine) maybe this summer, and I was told by pimp escort 98 that the best thing to do is to buy the ford escort shop manual and do it at home or something. I want to learn more about the engine, and even though it´s probably going to take me a month or something to do, the experience and increase of longevity of my car will be well worth it.

yeah its not terribly expensive, but the hard part is taking the right measurements and owning the right tools to resurface the cylinders and stuff.

But I think you´re right....it very well could be your rings. Dont feel bad, I´m coming to the conclusion my rings might be going too....but I´m going to do it as a home project on a new motor.
