Hi, I too am a newbie to the list... and turning to you for suggestions!

I've had my Escort for about 2 years now and am looking at ways of well... pimping it, or at least, making it more interesting. I'm not really sure where to start, so I'm turning to you guys for ideas/suggestions. BF suggested I start with cheesy rims from Target (the ones that spin) and work my way up... I'd like if possible to make the changes/modifications by myself... Although I'm a girl, I'm quite capable (changed speakers by myself)... So let me know!

Well, I'd like to beat Siragan to his usual question, which is what we would all ask, What do you want from the car? by "pimping it" do you mean that you only want looks, or do you want performance, or are you like me and want the "best of both worlds"? Let's start there and I'm sure you will get tons of replies, and if not, just look around in th eforums there have been tons of questions about this, look for anything involving the 1991-1996 (2G) scorts and most of it (except for maybe body components, depends on body style) will fit your car. Good luck, and have fun!

Well... hm, thanks for pointing that out. I guess I'd like to start first with looks... Of course, ideally, I'd looooove to improve performance, but I know that for that, I'd need to cough up some dough and I would like to postpone that... So - Pimping the car (here) means improve looks, and not necessarily in an elegant manner. Ideall, I'd like people to look back at it, and say 'look at THAT!'

Cops included?

I'd have to say that the best single thing I did for my car was putting on the tokico S/R struts and eibach springs, with the GC adjustable stuff too. Heh. Actually, it was pretty expensive. It'll cost you over a grand just for the stuff I've got on my car. Is it worth it? In a word, no. I got a really good deal on it, so I went for it. It really improved the handling and appearance of the car, stability at high speeds, low speed and high speed cornering, and also brake feel and stability in general.

Would I spend the 1300 bucks on the suspension stuff I put on there if I were to do it all over again? No. No matter how much you tune it, it's still a FWD car, and it will never have the same handling characteristics as a RWD car that is really set up for performance. The GT is, in one word, a comprimise. It's a daily driver that was set up with components to make it more street-worthy, but without significant modification to the chassis, it will never be truly great. If you really want performance, I suggest you find another car.

Are you sure you really want something flashy?

Allow my mind to wander for a minute here:

I like comparing cars to girls...

A honda is kinda like a hooker. They're kinda trashy, and they dress up to get your attention. They're cheap and easy.

I dunno how to describe it, but the cars that DON'T TRY to be sexy are always the sexiest cars.

A great way to start is with some new wheels and tires. They're the best appearance/performance mod you can do. It'll set you back about a grand, but if you get a honda in the future, the rims will probably swap over. Mind you that wider tires will be more difficult to turn, so your power steering pump and rack has to work harder, and they also usually have higher rolling resistance, so your fuel efficiency will go down.

Not ture Siragan... I ordered my GroundControls From Matt Berend and they were $400, and the Tokico S/R's only run about 180 with the shipping from OEM Fordparts, I'll look up the website later...

As far as the worth, for the 600 I spent it was well worth it, I can slam the car if wanted (Which I don't) or I can have it set for better handling while still getting that sporty look out of it as I'm sure you know.

So Sleepless, I would say that Siragan is right in the point that suspension will give you one of the biggest improvements in appearance, and it will also help the car to handle better in the long run too.

Other things that are easy to do and relatively cheap are clear corners (try Corksport or E-bay, mine were only $30 from the former), Tinting the windows will make it look a bit better in my opinion, and at least here in Cali, it helps to keep the car cool while I'm in class or at work.

Also, about the rims, I know that they are really expensive, which is why I don't have any rims yet, but look into getting some real rims, not the kind you can grab at AutoZone or Target, Or Pepboys, or wherever you can buy motoroil... Unless they have killer deals on Motegis (which Pepbos actually did a while back round here) I would hold out until you can afford some nice lightweight rims and goos sticky rubber to go around them.

Once again, have fun!

Edit: BTW, do you have any pics of the Scort that you can show us to give a better idea for suggestions? (sometimes color comes into play when I make choices)

first off, please..... stay away from neons. they are the cheapest/gayest looking mod you can do. take it from an 18 year old who has been there and already ditched it because it is so gay/pointless (i got some neon shortly after i got my car, and i already ditched the neon. i've only had my car since november) it's a hassle to rush and unplug everything whenever you see a cop, it makes your car look cheaper than it is, and it's just pointless to spend alot of money on tons of bright lights that will just put a larger strain on your alternator, and give you worse gas mileage. first thing you probably want to do, is get Sylvania silverstar headlights (around $40), or go for a cheaper set, as long as they're brighter than your current headlights. mine weren't very bright, so i got new GE cool blue ones for $20, and the light is brighter and whiter.
next, you'll probably want to look for a good cd player, and maybe even some decent speakers if you want better sound.

depending on what color car you have, you might want to get those clear corners. i would say though, if you have a white car like me, (i've recently decided against clear corners) because it will make your car look too plain. i want to keep some color to my car.

if later on you are looking to upgrade and build up for performance, then i would keep your car as stock looking as possible, and have a sleeper. if you can make your car look clean, and keep it nice, then it will look twice as good when the guys are starin at your tail lights.

if you have an escort LX, i would look for the front/rear bumpers and sideskirts off of a 2nd gen escort GT (91-96). and as long as you're getting the bumper, get the stock foglamps from it too. if you need the switch for it that goes in the dash, (in case the donor car doesn't have it) i have either 1 or two of them (brand new) in my basement. also i have the rear defrost switch for a 91-94, and one for a 95-96 (they are both for different spots in the dashboard, and shaped differently)

what you're most likely going to want to do is search on these forums somewhere and find the trunk release mod thread, and the gas door release mod thread, because those two just make your car look nicer than it is. next, get the rims from a 94-96 EGT, and put them on, with some good tires. they look nice (in my opinion), plus they're a bit larger than the stock LX ones.

Thanks Siragan... Certainly don't want the car to look like a hooker  ... I had not thought of that.

I'll take pictures and add them tonight... My escort is black... and is badly scratched. I'll be spending the next couple of days waxing/shining the car to try and minimize them (I'm the 4th owner)...

Thanks guys for all your suggestions (clean corners is a GREAT idea!) and keep'em coming....

if you want it to look good....as they said wheels and tires is one of the upgrades in looks and performance....you may want to look in getting the bumpers as they said and also the tnting, the radio, and i will recommend a fresh coat of paint or clear coat(don't do spray paint cans) then if you are a bit creative do a clear tail light(customing of course)....i did my tails when i accidentaly broke/cracked one of the lenses then i just started to break the other one then there it went the clear tails....but now a kid was biking aroung my block and bumped my tails so i have to redo it again...if you want to see the tails...its at my cardomain page....good luck and have fun....

ok..... just to make it easier for you, i'm going to make out a list of possible mods for you from what has already been said:

1) suspension
2) wheels and tires
3) clear corners
4) different headlight bulbs
5) cd player
6) speakers
7) 2nd gen escort GT bumpers/sideskirts/foglamps
8) gas door/trunk release mods
9) fresh coat of paint or clearcoat
10) custom clear taillights
11) window tinting (just whatever is legal)
12) slotted/drilled disc brake rotors
13) paint your brake calipers (since you don't have 4-wheel disc brakes, look into converting it)
14) greenstuff or carbon fiber brake pads to eliminate nasty brake dust from your wheels
15) clear side markers

BUT STAY AWAY FROM NEONS!!!!

we can add to this list when more people suggest more mods, but until then, this is all i can think of offhand.

Oh yeah forgot that you have a finished suspension... MY bad, but eh, for only 600 the rest of it ain't too shabby...

But here's another place to go , look at the thread here or at ERDT about things that can be done for under $50, some of them are not bad and can be good places to start for both appearance and performance and they are CHEAP, a good thing for all of us broke people driving escorts.

I look forward to seeing your Car, Black Scorts are dead sexy, Just look at the one Siragan used ot have in his Sig.... Where'd it go man?

P.S. Ummm.... Civic doesn't sound like a hooker name ot me, but isn't ESCORT another more civilized name for a prostitute? WTF is up with that? I agree with Sirigan's viewpoint though... Honda=Slutty (Except James) hehehe
