So i got myself a pair of output/axle shaft seals locally cheap
    TIMKEN 223543
These are listed on rock auto as main output shaft seals...
These don't have the outside lip that some of the other seals have

Such as the lip on this 2007N

I see there are many seals listed, axle, output, and some are noted to for use with certain transmissions... or on the left and right....

Basically they all have the same inner and outer measurements, but differ as far as that lip. And some are 10mm thick while others 12mm...

Ive already got this thing installed, on my 96 manual 5 speed... it looks good enough, but am i giving myself a problem here?

also fwiw i see the new shafts that autozone warranties are now all the 'gold' series, and now all have a slot for this seal to sit into... it looks like a good design and sure it works nice but not having it in the past hasn't resulted in any problems here... Rather I have a slow leak from a crack/chip in the outer rim when my axle got stuck and i beat it out.

I have five Escorts, have replaced the axle shaft seals on each of them, and have used both types. I dont see any problems.

the lip is a dust protector that keeps dirt from touching the main sealing surface.

No doubt, and id rather have it now that i noticed the lip and have the new axles that have the grove in the cv housing that is specifically made for the lip... but just curious how much faster im speeding up shit getting in there and messing up things by not having it...

Good to know, and now that im actually driving it less and less, i figure im not going to see a problem here before a boot splits or something else

Thanks for the tip! We don't get a lot of discussion on these seals.
