So I was cruising down the freeway and decided to open it up a bit... got her up to 100 but it felt kind of slow.... and it stalled on the way down... I was like WTF?

so i pulled over... and I had a vacuum hose disconnected (the fat one that connects under the intake manifold)... so im like ok... i had a boost leak. No big deal right?

So I hook it up, and get back on the road... felt fine at first... and then i started hearing a wierd ass sound coming from the engine bay. I pulled over yet again, open the hood and listen and it almost sounded like an exhaust leak... except it was coming from the exhaust manifold/turbo area... and it didn't really sound like a leak... just different and off.

so i got it home...let it cool off and checked all my IC piping... I checked the compressor side of the turbo, felt the blades, spun them, and everything compressor side feels fine.

I started it up and the same wierd sound... at home i could hear it better and it sounds like the blades of the turbo are skinning the sides of the housing or something... i have NO idea what the problem could be here.

its been fine for 2 weeks... yesterday changed my oil to motorcraft dino and AutoRX for a cleaning but I can't see that being the problem unless the turbo isn't getting lubricated enough.

does anyone have a clue what could be the problem here? this is really hard to describe... hopefully someone has had or read of a similar problem :(

Is the Car Smoking (idle or running)? If so how much?

Does it boost at all, when you drive it now that it is making this noise?

I just drove it... and it boosts, but not till much later... 3500-4000RPMs rather than 2500-3000 like before.

nah its not smoking to speak of.... except a little bit near the top radiator hose... and its the smell of coolant. the engine does seem to be running hotter than usual. I cant tell yet exactly since i broke the wiring to the coolant temp sensor and i havent been able to replace it yet. the radiator/hoses were hot as hell... hotter than usual (i check them often since i have no guage)

leaning my head over the exhaust manifold and turbo, i smell exhaust fumes when the car is running... but i dont see how i could have an exhaust leak... the downpipe is factory and hasn't been removed.

Ok, if it were smoking like a freight train, then it would have been the seals on the turbo, but dont worry about that now.

Ok, it still boost, even though late, but it still does, so you didn't snap/bend the shaft of the turbo.

You said you smell coolant, so you are burning coolant somewhere, are there any puddles/dripping under the car?

Can you Compression check it?

If you have the Haynes Manual it will tell you what happen during a compression check and what each thing means. It is a good way to see if you blew the head gastet.

Other then that I would have to be there to help you out man, sorry. Maybe some of the Escort Gods can help you out more here.

Good luck.

I'm pretty sure I have a manifold gasket leak...

how the hell could this have happened? what causes a gasket to crack/break?

I was driving it hard on a highway run before it happened... but shit these are supposed to withstand these kinds of things. this engine is low-mileage too.

ya i had that happen once when i was being stupid. i didnt torque the compressor wheel nut down far enough. it came loose and the wheel molested the compressor housing.it kinda boosted a little bit but most ly gave a horrid sound.

Ok, this mightbe a little off topic, and it might be offensive to some, but none the less I feel the need to state that I feel that if ya' don't know how to fix it when stuff goes wrong, ya shouldn't be turbo'ing your car...

well excuse me sir. I wasn't aware that knowing how to fix every conceivable problem that I may have with my car was a pre-requisite to having forced induction.

if you have this unlimited mechanical knowledge, then by all means, tell me how to fix my problem.

if not, please refrain from posting in this thread.

thanks :)

i work retail parts and i know cars. I have customers that come in and cant change wiper blades when they go bad.

does this mean that no matter who they are or the car they drive they shouldnt then drive inthe rain?

im with Adam on this one. sometimes "stuff" just comes up that you havent come across before, you live, you learn, you fix it and then you know for next time.

adam, sometimes the gaskets, being subject to so much heat and all just go.. its just a thing.

Wow, that was a bit....over the top?? NOBODY will ever know everything. End of story...

To keep this thread on topic, I hope you get it fixed....it's a pain in the ass when things don't work right.

thanks guys

well I know I have an exhaust leak at the manifold. I'm just not sure if its a crack, or a blown gasket either at the turbo or at the head.

so get this

the last thing I would've expected... a bolt came out on the exhaust side of the turbo... allowing exhaust gases to escape the turbine.

wtf?
