Oil Sending Unit

    Oil sending unit was leaking oil by the electrical connection not the threads that go into the block.
    I took out the dip stick tube to turn with 1-1/16 wrench. That little nub at the back of the starter was in the way.
    Am I missing something? Please tell me there is a special socket or something to make the removal easier?
    Also I notice the bolt for the shifter stabalizer bar was gone. I think it stripped the aluminum threads. Is helicoil my only option?

    The special socket will work - if you remove the starter first. I have managed to get a pair of vise-grips pliers back there, and clamped onto the serrated rim of the oil pressure switch. It was a tedious task to get the vise grips in there; both for removing the old one, and installing the new one; but I did it, working from below.

    I have a 5-speed, but I dont know what bolt you refer on the shift mechanism.

    can try a 12pt deep socket.
    the shift stabilizer should be attached to the trans with a stud and a nut, not a bolt.

    The aftermarket oil senders are worthless. Every one I have tried leaked again in a few months.

    Get a Motorcraft sender unless you want to change them out on a regular basis.

    Stud and a bolt? Hmmm. I think you are right. I will have to look at my 94'. The "stud" must tread in because there were threads in the hole of the transmission. Not at the beginning of the hole but I'm going to say about a 1/2" in. I looked in my selection and found a bolt that fit. I didn't torque it too much and it has held so far. I wonder why the stud, nut, etc. fell out?
    Thanks for the info.
    BTW. I didn't want to take the starter out for the oil pressure sending unit so I just used pliers and snugged it up with a wrench. The wrench would have been perfect if I cut it in half. Just too long in there to turn.

    starters prety ez to get in comparison.

    but ya, the stud probably was either hit by something at one point, or was loose and the threads eroded away over time due to the flex of the engine. the stabilizers job is to keep the shifter in the same plane as the engine so you can shift when the engines torqued.

    With the bolt out it was fun to watch the shift lever move all over the place when I hit the gas pedal. It most likely was damaged when we did the clutch over the summer.

    That worked. Probably would not have if the cylinder head were not off though. Now there seems to be a bunch of different aftermarket part numbers that don't seem to correspond to each other, but mine is one of the larger ones and I would think that one of the smaller ones would be better to install since it gives more room to clear the starter.

    I like the stubby one also because it uses high temp bakelite rather than the modern plastic of the longer one.

    It is annoying that (all) car makers can't seem to figure out how to make a sender unit that doesn't leak over time.

    That blue plastic cover probably unscrews, to reveal a smaller black plastic part of the switch below it. I dont think the blue plastic does anything to preserve the switch, but it doesnt hurt anything either.

    Anyway, it's a normally closed switch that open up above a certain pressure. Whatever pressure that is seems to vary. From 2PSI to around 6PSI, plus or minus 1-1.5PSI. I doubt that it will matter since normal oil pressure is much higher than that, and all it does is light a light. The threads seem to be some sort of not metric plumbing standard, I think.

    I believe the threads are 1/4 NPT, which is a bit strange since the fasteners on the engine are metric. So one would think that the pipe threads would also be metric, which is the same as BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper).

    That Lisle socket, and the similar sockets I have in my 'seldom-used-tools-box' are good where other stuff like an Escort starter isnt in the way.

    l agree in thinking the oil pressure switch hass a 1/4" NPT; or is at least interchangeable with that size.

    I find the oil pan drain plug head is a 16mm hex on most of my Escorts, but one of them has a plug hex that wants a 17mm box end......might be an aftermarket drain plug.

    I admit I have not checked to see if the oil pan drain plug head or the bolt for the idler pulley is a closer fit with a 9/16", 5/8" or any of the other size in my 'non-metric-tool box;

    I use my 8mm and 5/16" wrenches interchangeably.

    NPT and BSPT (aka ISO taper pipe thread) are very close. 1/4 and 3/8 sizes are the same pitch, and 1/8 sizes are 27 tpi and 28 tpi respectively, so they will mate and seal at low pressures (i.e. less than a few hundred psi).
    NPT uses a 60 degree thread profile, and BSPT uses 55 degree.

    I don't like to mix them because one or both pieces will get the threads damaged, and it isn't the proper way.

    Just got back from Home Depot, and yes the oil pressure sending unit does fit in a 1/4" pipe thread in the display thing. Should have taken a picture of that.

    Torque specs as per FSM is 9-13ft-lbs. Drawing in FSM also incorrectly shows electrical connector to be a male spade terminal, like this one:
