So, I took out the lower part of the air intake box and I discovered that there was some oil in it. Is that bad? I dunno, it just doesn't seem normal to have oil in the air intake box... Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I have a 91 LX

Thanks. I was about to clean out the oil when I realized, "Hey, why don't I just go pickup a cone filter?" So now I'm on my way to Autozone. Bye.

Jeff is 100% correct.

Mine's been doing that since I bought it (8 years ago). I replace the PCV filter often and also use some oil adsorbent material in the bottom of the air box (under the air filter).

It is not a major problem - just replace the PCV filter as often as necessary.

I know it won't help with the blow by problem, I just figured that since I took out the airbox and stuff I would pick up a cone filter.

So, what's the easiest way to take out that air box??? I butchered mine when I installed my air intake because it wouldn't come out.

I want to know if the PCV filter is the little foam in the bottom where the oil breather is hooked up
or is it the big air filter?

the pcv valve is located on the back side of the valve cover.

my cousin had this problem bad for a short time... he took a corner with an integra next to him (double turn lane) both parties got on it and when we looked back we had a smoke screen... we were on it for maybe a 16th of a mile and the whole way it was just dense smoke... ill ask him what it was, i cannot remember off the top of my head... im leaning toward pcv valve but i cannot remember for sure.

What are you talking about? The PCV valve has almost nothing to do with this. Yeah, a failed or frozen PCV valve could result in a burning oil smoke screen, but he's talking about oil backing up into the air filter housing. The valve and the filter are part of the same system, but he doesn't have a valve problem - in fact, the valve works properly.

The PCV filter (breather) is the the little rectangular sponge in the end of the air filter housing. $2.

the pcv valve is located in diferent places on diff vehicals. a 1.9 would have it in front of the motor conected to the crank case breather tube.

some of you guys really surprise me some times.

Cone filter?

I have a 90 escort with the same problem. What is the cone filter and how does it work?

Where can I get one?

all youll need is to go to autozone or somethin like that and buy the filter for about 25 bucks then youll need the adaptor which should be right by it. its a square piece of metal with a round opening to secure the filter. the adaptor is way overpriced but you need it. its about 15 bucks. then you take off the top of the airbox by the four bolts holding it to the mass air flow sensor, attach the adaptor to the mass air flow and slide the cone on and tighten it up. also in the top part of the air box is the intake temp sensor, you can just unscrew it from the box and let it hang. then you will enjoy an amazing new sound from your engine:D

blow by

had the same problem.... '90 LX only to discover that there is no PCV
in this model... it's some odd collection of tubing... and a little saucer shaped valve thing.

i'm thinking of pulling it away from the airbox and adding a tube to drain the oil into a soup can tied on with a coat hanger.

...it worked on an old, old IH farm truck.......

...cone filters are 25 bux... or aboot that...

My fix to the problem cost $14.32.

Lowes high heat tubing, get some that fits the valve cover male end.
Pepboys, or anywhere else, small not cone, but SMALL breather ~10 bux. Take HH tubing and bend it over night in a vice, or if HH tubing is kept on a roll at Lowes, it will come with a natural bend...angle the bend upwards, slap on Breather... voila.

first gens dont have a PCV valve unless its a GT. LX has some other contraption. so all the first gen scorts have that problem, just make sure your hoses arent sucked shut and you shouldnt spray that much oil.
